Dawn Speers, Technical Manager at ABP Newry has won a major UK-wide Meat Businesswoman award. Dawn who is from Markethill is responsible for animal welfare, food safety, quality control and legal & customer standards at the site.Dawn Speers from Markethill receiving her award from the broadcaster Katie Derham and Richard Watson of Reiser at the UK Women in Meat Industry Awards in London recently.
The Women In Meat Industry Awards recognise the important contributions that women make to the sector. Broadcaster and radio presenter, Katie Derham, presented Dawn with her award for the processing/manufacturing category at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington London recently. The event attracted nearly 7,000 votes for the finalists this year.Dawn Speers with some of the recent graduate recruits and bursary winners at ABP Newry.
Dawn comes from a farming background and holds a degree in Food Technology, a Masters in Communication and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management. She has been instrumental in introducing a bespoke undergraduate bursary and placement programme to ABP in Northern Ireland which rewards students at Queen’s University and CARE’s Loughry Campus with financial support and a work placement within the business. She is a committed ambassador for the industry and to ABP’s diversity goals by encouraging newcomers to join the meat industry especially women through its educational outreach activities which also include the ABP Angus Youth Challenge, a skills based competition for teenagers interested in working in agri-food.
