A new Weekly Art Therapy Clinic is opening in the heart of the Ring Of Gullion. Hosting the Clinic is Art Psychotherapist David Cunningham, an Adult, Adolescent and Child Art Psychotherapist & Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. The Clinic will take place in the Round House, Bluebell Lane, 49 Tullymacreeve Rd., Mullaghabawn.
Cunningham is from Newry and his work is across the entire spectrum from child to adult. When supporting children of primary school age, he works together with parents and children to help support emotional co-regulation. For children, he offers a wide range of therapeutic approaches, art, play and movement that suits each child’s capacity and interests. Children can use sensory painting, clay, drawing or story-building through puppetry or physical soft games, so they find their own way to make connection and repair.
For adolescents, Cunningham offers both creative approaches and psycho-somatic tools, that help them feel less stuck and more in control of their own mental health and needs and for adults, he offers an integrative approach of Art Psychotherapy and Somatic Experiencing, that supports a new and self-empowering awareness of their capacity to renegotiate trauma.
Cunningham said "Whether you are living with anxiety, depression, or overwhelmed, feeling angry and exhausted, I can support you or or your family member to find your way back into emotional regulation. With over fourteen years of experience as a therapist, I have supported many on their to repair from their experience of trauma and high levels of stress. My approach offers people repair and reconnection to their needs, and the tools and choices they have to move forward. I also have worked in bereavement support
"The opposite to the experience of trauma or feeling overwhelmed, is connection: being seen, heard, and feeling like we matter. I feel very grateful to have worked as a creative therapist to help clients of all ages since I started my practice in 2014."
After the initial assessment appointment, Cunningham works with individual people in 6 weeks blocks, with the sixth session acting as a review to agree what further support is needed, whether that be another set of six weeks or a fortnightly or monthly check-in to help sustain positive change and integration of the emotional skills and tools in the person’s daily life. Therapy is a choice to commit to support change.
Fees range from £45-£60 per hour (depending on the social circumstance of the person).
Cunningham is a HCPC registered Art Psychotherapist (MSc from Queen’s University Belfast), and a trauma informed Somatic Experience Practitioner (EASE)
