“The Cross Border Consumer” was the topic of the second Border People (www.borderpeople.info) User Group meeting on 14 December 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk. The meeting brought together key organisations with a vested interest in business and consumer activity in the border region as part of the EU INTERREG IVA funded project managed by the Centre for Cross Border Studies in partnership with the North South Ministerial Council.

Newry Chamber Hosts Historic Business Lunch with Minister Sammy Wilson, Department of Finance & Personnel Over 100 guests attended a Newry Chamber of Commerce Business Lunch with guest speaker Sammy Wilson MP MLA, Minister of the Department of Finance & Personnel on Thursday 4th February 2010 in the Canal Court Hotel.
The theme of the event was ‘How will the assembly help Newry’s Economy in 2010?’. The audience, which included of Minister Conor Murphy MP MLA, local business leaders, MLA’s, Senior Government Officials and visiting Chamber Presidents, were delivered a comprehensive overview by Minister Wilson on the Northern Ireland Assembly’s strategy for rebuilding the economy in the wake of the worldwide recession. Speaking after the event President of Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade, Dr Conor Patterson stated, ‘Newry Chamber welcomed the opportunity to speak to the Minister on the eve of his Party, the DUP reaching agreement on the devolution of Policing and Justice’.
During his address to the Minister, Dr Patterson highlighted the substantial contribution that Newry makes to the Northern Ireland economy, adding that this contribution should be matched by Government commitment through investment in infrastructure projects such as the Southern Relief Road. The return on this investment could not be matched anywhere else in Northern Ireland.
Dr Patterson stated, ‘there are many untapped opportunities emanating from within the region, which if exploited could benefit the entire Northern Ireland economy. It is through partnership between local stakeholders and central Government that we can rebuild the economy and maximise this regions potential’.
Dr Patterson asked the Minister to reconsider his views on the Bain Report with respect to the location of public sector employment, stating, ‘Some of those jobs particularly in small specialist units could be more cost effectively based in Newry. We have the high calibre workforce, for less cost in cheaper accommodation’.

Newry is one of the locations for a training workshop which hope to offer a unique business opportunity for SMEs and the Civil Security industry in Ireland, North and South, was launched last week at the European Commission in Dublin by Minister for Trade and Commerce, Billy Kelleher, T.D on behalf of InterTradeIreland.
InterTradeIreland, in association with INNOVATOR and the Centre for Irish and European Security has developed a new pilot initiative, the Innovation Connections Programme to help 60 SMEs to take advantage of the unmet and future needs of the Civil Security market. Through the programme, companies will participate in 2-day workshops in Cork, Galway, Dublin and Newry where they will be guided through pre-identified business opportunities and shown how they can develop new products, processes and services to avail of the opportunities in this high growth market.
The Civil Security sector, which is estimated to be worth in excess of €26 billion in Europe, represents a significant business opportunity for SMEs as the combination of heavy market regulation and ongoing threats to societal security creates demand for new products and services. Now, based on in-depth end-user research into the sector across the island, InterTradeIreland has uncovered 15 new business opportunities to help SMEs break into this untapped growth market.
New business opportunities have been identified in areas such as - communications, intelligent software, digital media, architectural design, intelligent lighting and signage systems, dangerous substances, access control / security systems, sensor detection and surveillance technology. Minister for Trade and Commerce Mr. Billy Kelleher T.D welcomed the initiative and the opportunities it provides for Ireland’s SMEs saying, “Ireland’s ambition is to become a world leader in innovation. To achieve this we must continue to deliver demand-led innovative products and services as well as developing skills for innovation, new organisational structures and new business models. InterTradeIreland’s Innovation Connections Programme will set out to prove the benefits of a user-centred approach to innovation. It is an approach that has the potential to create new business growth opportunities and enable Ireland’s SMEs to develop their capabilities and compete, not only across the island, but also in Europe and throughout the world.”
Speaking at the launch event, InterTradeIreland Director Aidan Gough said the programme was a novel approach: “Our Innovation connections programme reverses traditional methods to building innovation in SMEs. With conventional R&D models, products and services are developed and then market tested, however, using an unmet needs approach the end-users unmet and future requirements are identified first and used to develop the required products and services. While the pilot initiative focuses on the civil security sector the model can be applied in many different sectors across the island – innovation has no boundaries.” he explained.

Members of the Newry business and civic community have released a statement following this weeks bombing:
In light of the recent car bomb attack on Newry Courthouse we the undersigned, as individuals, businesses, representative organisations and community groups, would like to assure shoppers, tourists and business people across the UK and Ireland that our city remains open for business. Newry has a vibrant and innovative business and civic community which has always shown resilience. It is this spirit that has allowed the city to flourish in recent times and become one of the major centres of trade and commerce on the island.
This type of attack will not be allowed to disrupt the work of the trading and civic community in the city. Newry has always lived up to Dean Swift’s definition of ‘a proud people’ and that pride only intensifies in the face of adversity.
We stand alongside our political representatives by saying that Newry is open for business and we will not allow this type of event to disrupt everyday life in our city. In less than 24 hours after the blatant attack on our community all commuter routes into the city had reopened and traffic flow returned to normal.
We want to send a very clear message to those that live, visit, shop or work in our city. We are open with trading levels back to normal. We are ready to welcome all those who wish to join us in making business, enterprise, community and economic renaissance our lasting legacy.

Formula Karting celebrated their 18th birthday party on Friday, with friends turning out in the hundreds to party well into Saturday morning!
