Semi Final for St Mary's Girls

Two pupils from St Mary's High School Newry are through to the semi final of the fabulous Junk Kouture Competition which will be held tonight in the Millennium Forum in Derry.

Junk Kouture in association with the European Recycling Platform (ERP) is a national competition for second level students in Ireland and Northern Ireland which challenges teenagers to create high-end wearable fashion from everyday junk that would normally find its way into the bin. 

Danielle Kinney and Odeta Zurictyte , two  6th year students at St Mary's High School in Newry, have worked tirelessly from October to create these masterpieces. Danielle's 'Toy Soldier' ensemble is based on the effects of war and how

children are often robbed of their childhood and Odeta's 'A Flight of Fancy' is about her uprooting from Lithuania and her journey to Ireland. 

These  outfits are made solely from recyclable materials. The majority of the Danielle's  costume is made from broken toys, with the waste from the hole puncher and Odeta's is made from leaves, seatbelts and black bin bags. 

Danielle and Odeta with their supporters from St Mary's will travel to Derry tonight to walk the catwalk in the Capital of Culture.
