Write a commentIn celebration of Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 the Enterprising Innovators of Southern Regional College organised a series of events to raise awareness of Fairtrade values and products.
These events aimed to encourage ethical enterprise and to educate the students about the powers which they have as consumers.
The main event took place in the Newry Campus on Thursday 4th March, and Hella Alkiuru who is the African Regional Coordinator for the International Union of Food and Agricultural Workers was in attendance. Ms Alkiuru travelled from her base in Nairobi, Kenya to share her experiences of the benefits that Fairtrade can bring to developing nations. This was complemented by Peter Gaynor, the Executive Director of Fairtrade Mark Ireland, who spoke from a more local point of view; giving the students an insight into Fairtrade as an organisation and how it has impacted on our society. The students then undertook a number of enterprising activities, including a Dragon’s Den style competition, which were devised by the Enterprising Innovators to inspire the students to think both creatively and ethically concerning all future enterprise.
These events have been widely supported by local retailers and companies, including Grounded Espresso Bar, Newry; Real Beverage Solutions, Portadown; Café Eden, Portadown and Rumour Café, Armagh.
