St Coleman's in Corn na nÓg Final

This Saturday the 6th of March, St Colmans Year 10 pupils will play in the Corn na nÓg Final against old rivals St Pats Maghera at Derrytresk at 12 noon. Having comprehensively defeated local school Abbey CBS in the quarter-finals and a strong Monaghan outfit in the semis, Colmans’ should be quietly confident going into this game.

The Violet Hill defence is backboned by 4 players form the Clonduff club – Liam McAleavey carrying on the family tradition of minding nets in front of central defenders Rory McQuaid and Conal Brown. Liam McGreevy makes up the quartet at corner back opposite Drumgaths’ Liam Hynes while wing backs Aidan McKiernan and Johnny Brown will provide the platform for attack. Midfield duo of Cormac McKay and Conor Magee will have their work cut our against a formidable Derry pairing but if they can break even at least the Newry boys will be in with a chance. The forward line has representatives from all three Newry based clubs – Shamrocks’ Jack Haughey captains the team on the edge of the square and is supported by Mitchels’ Sean Tierney and Boscos’ Barney Doyle in the wing half forward slots. East Down representatives Ryan Devlin (Kilcoo) and Pearse Og McCrickard (Liatriom) will provide the finishing power in the corners while another Clonduff player, Patrick O’Hagan, will pull the strings from centre half forward.

This is the third Corn na nÓg final in 4 years for St. Colmans, and the boys will be trying to emulate their schoolmates of 2 years ago and win this weekend. Overall the College are a well balanced, hard working team who are undefeated in all games played this year. However, it will take a mighty effort from all involved this weekend if they are to regain this trophy that they have won a record 17 times.
