Year 10 students from St Colman’s took part in a Robotics Road show organised by Sentinus this week.
They programmed robots to run and make appropriate turns on a race track using lap tops and appropriate software under the skill and guidance of the road show instructor, James Conner from Sentinus.
The pupils were thoroughly engaged in the task and developed skills such as problem solving and working with others all in line with the revised curriculum.
Year 13 students also developed their leadership skills by acting as mentors for the event. St Colman’s is delighted to be working with Sentinus to give the students opportunities for skills based learning outside of the normal classroom. Events like this happen in order to build on the important work going on in the college - a specialist school for science

NVQ level 1 and 2 Food and Beverage students held a successful fund raising coffee morning in the Graduate restaurant when almost £200 was donated to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Guests enjoyed a range of coffees including cappuccino, latte and Americano. Sincere thanks to all who supported the event which was one of a series of fundraising efforts by the School of Hospitality & Tourism for the Haiti disaster

St Colman’s Boys Win Newry Heat of the Credit Union Quiz.
Congratulations to Thomas Carlin, Stephen Love, Conor McConville and Jamie McAteer who demonstrated their extensive general knowledge to win the local heat of the Credit Union Heat.
The team will now go on to compete in the chapter finals to be held in Armagh City Hotel on Friday, 5th March The boys are pictured with their tutor, Mrs Soracha O’Hare.

Each year NHS run a competition to produce four designs for the school Christmas card. The Art department raised £176.00 from the sale of the cards. The designs were innovative and exciting and all money raised from the sale of the cards will be donated to Cancer Research. Local businesses have once again been majorly supportive in providing donations for the printing of the cards, we would like to express our appreciation of this.

This Saturday the 6th of March, St Colmans Year 10 pupils will play in the Corn na nÓg Final against old rivals St Pats Maghera at Derrytresk at 12 noon. Having comprehensively defeated local school Abbey CBS in the quarter-finals and a strong Monaghan outfit in the semis, Colmans’ should be quietly confident going into this game.
The Violet Hill defence is backboned by 4 players form the Clonduff club – Liam McAleavey carrying on the family tradition of minding nets in front of central defenders Rory McQuaid and Conal Brown. Liam McGreevy makes up the quartet at corner back opposite Drumgaths’ Liam Hynes while wing backs Aidan McKiernan and Johnny Brown will provide the platform for attack. Midfield duo of Cormac McKay and Conor Magee will have their work cut our against a formidable Derry pairing but if they can break even at least the 
Newry boys will be in with a chance. The forward line has representatives from all three Newry based clubs – Shamrocks’ Jack Haughey captains the team on the edge of the square and is supported by Mitchels’ Sean Tierney and Boscos’ Barney Doyle in the wing half forward slots. East Down representatives Ryan Devlin (Kilcoo) and Pearse Og McCrickard (Liatriom) will provide the finishing power in the corners while another Clonduff player, Patrick O’Hagan, will pull the strings from centre half forward.
This is the third Corn na nÓg final in 4 years for St. Colmans, and the boys will be trying to emulate their schoolmates of 2 years ago and win this weekend. Overall the College are a well balanced, hard working team who are undefeated in all games played this year. However, it will take a mighty effort from all involved this weekend if they are to regain this trophy that they have won a record 17 times.

Saint Colman's College etched out a very hard earned win over reigning Champions and long time Ulster Colleges’ rivals St. Patricks Maghera at the Corn na nÓg Final played on a superb Derrytresk pitch last Saturday morning.
Having been undefeated all season, and coming off the back of commanding wins over St McCartans Monaghan and local side Abbey CBS in the semi and quarter-finals respectively, the College went into the match as slight favourites St Colmans started very nervously, however, and allowed their Derry opponents to get the upper hand in the opening stages – Maghera opening up a deserving 4 point at half time The College were finding it difficult to escape the close marking, however they did manage to muster scores from Patrick O’Hagan, Barney Doyle and the impressive Ryan Devlin (2). They did have an opportunity to close the gap just before the break but a fine save from Maghera keeper Ciaran McCloy denied Clonduffs’ Patrick O’Hagan a certain goal.
Some stern words from managers Kevin Franklin and Ronan Mcmahon at the interval resulted in a much more focused and determined Newry side coming out in the second half. St Colman’s had the advantage of a slight breeze and opened brightly with 2 points from lively corner forward Pearse Óg McCrickard. However Ruairi McElwee pointed 3 frees from and Conor Convery scored another to see the Derry team 5 points ahead as the second half reached its midway point. Newry Mitchels’ Sean Tierney and McElwee exchanged pointed frees before an incisive run and wonderful goal from Tierney brought St Colman’s back into the match. Maghera stretched their lead before points from Pearse Óg McCrickard and classy half-back Aidan McKiernan drew St Colman’s level for the first time in the game. Just as Colmans had clawed themselves level wing back Johnny Brown received a second yellow card and was dismissed with ten minutes to go. This seemed to galvanise the Voilet Hill boys, however. The withdrawal of Captain Jack Haughey to the half forward line left an ocean of space for Devlin and McCrickard on the edge of the square and the excellent Clonduff duo of Rory McQuaid and Conall Brown pushed up from defence, confusing Maghera who didn’t know where to put their extra man and allowing Colmans to really push forward in the last few minutes. McElwee did point twice more for St Patrick’s- the second opportunity was really a goal chance- but Patrick O’Hagan was able to capatilise on some great tackling and pressure form midfielders Cormac McKay and Conor Magee to send over points in the 25th, 29th and 31st minutes, ensuring St Colman’s were one point up at the final whistle. The large contingent of College supporters were delighted to see Captain Jack Haughey be presented with the cup and extend their record as the most successful school in Ulster in this competition.

In celebration of Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 the Enterprising Innovators of Southern Regional College organised a series of events to raise awareness of Fairtrade values and products.
These events aimed to encourage ethical enterprise and to educate the students about the powers which they have as consumers.
The main event took place in the Newry Campus on Thursday 4th March, and Hella Alkiuru who is the African Regional Coordinator for the International Union of Food and Agricultural Workers was in attendance. Ms Alkiuru travelled from her base in Nairobi, Kenya to share her experiences of the benefits that Fairtrade can bring to developing nations. This was complemented by Peter Gaynor, the Executive Director of Fairtrade Mark Ireland, who spoke from a more local point of view; giving the students an insight into Fairtrade as an organisation and how it has impacted on our society. The students then undertook a number of enterprising activities, including a Dragon’s Den style competition, which were devised by the Enterprising Innovators to inspire the students to think both creatively and ethically concerning all future enterprise.
These events have been widely supported by local retailers and companies, including Grounded Espresso Bar, Newry; Real Beverage Solutions, Portadown; Café Eden, Portadown and Rumour Café, Armagh. The Irish Drama group from St Paul’s High School, Bessbrook have been celebrating the news that their production of ‘Áras na Rún’ which was performed as part of Newry Irish Drama Festival, has been nominated for performance at the Ulster Festival in Armagh on 26 March.
Year 10 actor Shane McGirr was also named Best Actor at the festival, with his co-star Year 12 student, Neil Byrne, receiving a Highly Commended Award. Adjudicator, Lynette Fay from BBC, praised the high production standards for the St Paul’s play, and remarked on the flawless acting abilities of the young cast. She was very impressed by how well the group interacted on stage and used their natural comedic abilities for humorous effect. ‘Áras na Rún’ is an adaptation of Ré Ó Láighléis’ play, as is the story of a class visit to a local museum. Shane McGirr plays the role of Pádraig Ó Dúgáin, a sleepy student who is surprised when the statues in the museum suddenly come to life.
Neil Byrne plays local boxing hero Barra Mag Uiginn, with Anita Dennison impressing as the stern school teacher. The Irish Drama group which is mentored by Mr S Quinn, Miss C McCoy of the Irish Department, and Head of Drama Ms P Lynch, have been rehearsing and working hard for months. They look forward to the Ulster Drama Festival in Armagh at the end of March.

Justin McNulty, Project Director & Performance Coach from Motiv8, All Ireland Medal Winner and current Armagh Selector for the County Board recently visited Sport Studies students at the Newry Campus, Southern Regional College to inspire and 
motivate them. Almost 60 students attended a workshop held by Justin in an attempt to broaden their horizons and consider self-employment as a career option. The students were encouraged to think about enterprise and entrepreneurial development as they participated in various physical activities, listened to motivational speeches and watched stimulating videos. SRC Sports Studies Lecturer Richard Gough commented “It is great to see local sports personalities developing as innovative enterprise, such as Motiv8. Justin’s visit to the college was an inspiration to staff and students alike and generated many imaginative and enterprising discussions in the classes which followed.
