At one of his final duties as Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Councillor John Feehan, hosted a ceremony at the Council Offices to present three local schools with their prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag awards.
St Colman’s College and St Malachy’s Nursery School, Newry achieved the accolade for the first time. St Colman’s and St Malachy’s are also the first secondary school and nursery school in the district to be awarded Green Flags. St Joseph’s Primary Bessbrook successfully renewed their Green Flag status this year after being first time award winners last year.
Councillor Feehan speaking to the teachers and pupils attending the presentation ceremony said “This is a tremendous achievement. The Green Flag award is internationally recognised and only obtained by those schools who have reached the highest of environmental standards”.
“Well done to all the staff and pupils whose dedication has resulted in these awards. A special word of congratulations to the members of the Eco Committees present here today. You have taken the lead by making sure that your school cares about the environment and puts in place sound environmental practices.” he added.
Colin Latham, the Northern Ireland Eco-Schools Manager, stated “There is tremendous momentum for the eco schools award scheme being created in the Newry and Mourne District Council area. We have built on the five green flag primary schools awarded last year and now have the first nursery and secondary schools proudly flying their flags. All of these schools are an excellent example of what Eco-Schools is all about. The schools, teachers, pupils and staff deserve congratulations for all their efforts and also the Council for helping to promote the scheme locally.”

Southern Regional College hosted its first Student Recognition Awards Ceremony at the Armagh Campus
Over 80 students received awards for their contributions to sports and skills competitions throughout the year. Among the award winners were SRC Ladies Hockey Team, SRC Ladies Soccer Team, SRC Volleyball Teams, SRC Gaelic Team, SRC Culinary Team and SRC Food Service Team.
There were also a number of individual awards presented to those involved in charity or voluntary work and a number of other students who succeeded in competitions such as Skillbuild, Essential Skills Awards and Apprentice of the Year Awards.
Commenting after the event, Mr Brian Doran, Chief Executive of SRC remarked: “The list of achievements today was nothing short of impressive and highlighted the success the College has had on both the national and international stage”.

The rewards of the academic year are once more witnessed by students and staff at St. Colman’s as they receive once again an excellent set of examination results. The students were welcomed to the College to receive their results by the outgoing President, Canon Francis Brown and by Mr Cormac Mc Kinney, the new principal of St Colman’s.
Speaking on the occasion, Canon Brown expressed his delight that the students had achieved excellent results and that very many had already been accepted for their first choice of course at university. He thanked the parents for their support over the past seven years and also congratulated the teaching staff for their work with the students. He commented that the AS results were very commendable. Mr Mc Kinney congratulated the students on their excellent achievements at AS and A2 level and said that he looked forward to the students of the college achieving their full potential in all aspects of their academic studies in the years ahead.
On August 31st we will welcome our new intake of students as we say goodbye to those who have just received their results. May the good work which has taken place during their seven years in St. Colman’s be further developed and enhanced as they move to third level and eventually to the world of work. Our wish is that they have benefited significantly from the caring ethos of their Alma Mater.

Hundreds Celebrate at Southern Regional College’s Higher Education Graduation
Southern Regional College Higher Education Graduates celebrated their success alongside family, friends and staff at a prestigious Graduation Ceremony held at the Armagh City Hotel.
466 students were eligible to graduate from some of the 40 higher education courses available at the College. Degrees, Foundation Degrees, HND’s, HNC’s and many more professional qualifications were awarded to graduands from the College’s Armagh, Banbridge, Newry, Lurgan and Portadown Campuses.
Mr Brian Doran, Chief Executive of Southern Regional College welcomed students and their family and friends and spoke of how proud the College is of its students:
“It is an honour to see you all here today, especially those of you for whom this rite of passage represents a culmination of several years’ hard work and application. Your presence here today demonstrates the important role that the College plays in diversifying the higher education system.” Mr Doran continued “The Southern Regional College remains committed to providing everyone, irrespective of social class or economic circumstances, with an equal opportunity to avail of higher education opportunities. The College will continue to resist the pressure to apply top up fees to our HE courses”.
Guest speaker, Mr Jonathan Guest, Managing Director, MJM Group addressed the audience:
“It is a privilege to be associated with Southern Regional College, a centre of excellence. This event today shows how the College enables many people across various areas and in different circumstances to realise their full potential. The energy and enthusiasm of the students here today is palpable”.
Southern Regional College was honoured to have received an annual student award of £5,000 from Norbrook Laboratories as well as two runner up prizes of £3,000 each. Mr Doran paid tribute to Lord Ballyedmond for his generosity in sponsoring the awards which he said provided much needed financial assistance for students progressing to Higher Education programmes
The Norbrook Prize is awarded annually to a student of Southern Regional College completing a full time FE programme of study at Level 3 (e.g. A level equivalent). The prize is awarded to the individual who best demonstrates that they have the skills and attributes most relevant for future employment.
Mr Martin Murdock, Financial Director at Norbrook Laboratories represented Lord Ballyedmond at the Graduation event and presented Michael Wasinski as the winner of this prestigious prize. The runner up prizes of £3,000 were presented to Kyle Boyd and Lynsey McManus respectively.
Student of the Year Awards were presented for each of the eight schools at Southern Regional College.

Congratulations to St Colman's pupil Thomas Carlin, a second year student who gained a GCSE A* grade in Russian.
This is a great achievement for Thomas and his mother who taught him. We hope it is the first of many excellent results for Thomas.

Dundalk Institute of Technology opens its doors to prospective second-level students, mature students, students from PLC colleges, parents, teachers and guidance counsellors from all across the northeast on Friday 15th October between 9.00am and 2.30pm.
The Open Day provides the ideal opportunity to visit the campus and learn all about the many exciting developments which are taking place at DkIT. The day includes a range of talks, tours of the campus, exhibitions, demonstrations, and information sessions. There will also be a chance to meet with both college staff and current students to talk about course choices and life as a student at DkIT.
The Institute is the number one choice for many students from across the northeast region, and with its population currently at 5,000 (full-time and part-time students), DkIT continues to go from strength to strength.
For those who are unable to make the Open Day, there is opportunity to attend an Open Evening in the Institute on Thursday, 14th October, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm.
There is also an informative talk on Going to DkIT at 7.30pm in the Institute’s Whitaker Theatre which may be of interest to mature student applicants who are thinking of returning to full-time education and to parents of prospective students who want to find out more about what DkIT has to offer.

Six lucky year 9 pupils travelled to Belfast on Wednesday for the launch of the N.I Book award now in its second year. R.B.A.I was the venue and the guest speaker was Chris Bradford, well known Author of the Young Samurai series of books. It turned out to be a truly sword wielding knuckle crunching event. He enthralled his young audience with tales of Samurai and Ninja and drew gasps of wonder when he produced a genuine Ninja sword and brandished it over their heads.
A local book award aimed at pupils aged 11- 14 it is the brainchild of two school librarians, Ann Cowdrey (Bangor Grammar) and Kathy Lindsay (RBAI) who wished to give young people an award scheme that is local and pupil led. This year over 30 local schools are taking part and there will be a variety of activities throughout the year. Log on to the website for more details www.nibookaward.org.uk/

BT Young Scientist. Dean Connolly (S3) and Michael Fitzpatrick (S1) from Saint Coleman's attended the BT young scientist’s lunch time reception in the long gallery at Stormont on Wednesday 10 November 2010.
The event consisted of an address by the minister for Education Catriona Ruane, preceeded by addresses from the representatives of the sponsors of the event, BT.
The STEM modules were in attendance and the students had the opportunity to use electron microscopes, thermal imaging equipment, various data logging devices as well as a selection of IT applications for use in Science education. There was then a buffet luncheon served followed by a tour of Stormont buildings.
Dean’s project on the possible placebo effect of glucose drinks has won through to the RDS competition in Dublin in January where he will be one of 27 entries from N. Ireland from 16 schools who will compete with other schools from all over Ireland in the exhibition.
This year saw a record entry of almost 2000 projects in the initial stage. Best of luck to Dean in the next stage of the competition.

Three Saint Coleman's S1 students: Brendan Digney, Gavin Fleming and JJ McAnerney recently won the Open Your Mind Public Speaking Competition.
The boys delivered speeches on ‘Happiness is not having what you want: it is wanting what you have.’ The coveted trophy will return to the College after our earlier victory in 2007.
Mrs Sinead Savage deserves credit for helping the boys prepare for the competition.
There was stiff competition from St Joseph’s Grammar Donaghmore who were placed second and Banbridge High School who were awarded third place.
