Nine Design and Technology students from St. Colman’s College, Violet Hill, Newry displayed their A Level Engineering and Product Design projects to the judges at the prestigious Sentinus Young Innovators competition. The event held on Tuesday 14th June, in the Odyssey arena Belfast is the largest showcase of its kind in the United Kingdom and provides students with an opportunity to present their design solutions and manufacturing skills to teams of expert judges and their peers.
Staff and pupils at the College were delighted to learn that;
Mark Mc Evoy (Dromore) was presented with the Queens University of Belfast Award for Product Design by Dr. Paul Herman. He received a Crystal trophy, Certificate and prize of £125 for his MULTI-LIFT product.
Marks prototype is designed for use with all contemporary tractor front loaders. Constructed from heavy guage steel the MULTI-LIFT utilises a hydraulic boom to allow the tractor operator to load / unload ½ ton bags of fertilizer without leaving the cab. It also provides the facility to lift a variety of heavy loads and place them with precision. The combination of CAD / CAM, the range of skills and the quality of finish impressed the judge’s. Much comment and interest was shown in the MULTI-LIFT during the event.
Following Mark’s award were the nominations for the Young Engineers chosen to represent Northern Ireland in the UK National BIG BANG / Young Engineers Fair scheduled for next March in the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Darryl Brannagan (Castlewellan) with his LAMB ADOPTION UNIT
Darryl’s Product is designed to assist in overcoming the common problem of lamb rejection. Manufactured from mild steel the unit is incorporated into a pen allowing the ewe to be restrained for a short time to allow her to bond with the newborn lamb. The unit is robust yet portable and holds the animal comfortably.

Conor’s product is designed for holding calves securely to enable medication to be carried out by one person. Constructed from mild steel the crush incorporates a head restraint and has removable side panels and wheels for portability.
Presenting the nominations the Director of Sentinus Mr. Brian Campbell congratulated all three students on their achievement and reinforced his interest in promoting STEM subjects in schools.

‘Grit King’
A product constructed from mild and stainless steel which spreads grit or rock salt on pathways to prevent icing.
Aaron Morgan (Kilcoo)
‘Bin Clamp’
A product constructed from mild steel which helps overcome the problem of empty bins being blown over by the wind. The clamp allows access to the bin whilst securing it.
Niall Rooney (Newry)
‘Calf Crush’
Niall’s product is designed for holding calves securely to enable medication to be carried out by one person. Constructed from mild steel the crush incorporates a head restraint and holds the animal securely and in comfort.
Shane Colgan (Lurgan)
‘Wheel Mate’
A product designed to enable car wheels to be sprayed horizontally thus helping prevent undesirable runs in paintwork.
With reference to all the College entries this year the Chairman of Engineering Judges remarked that it was “refreshing to see students addressing real life opportunities for design and producing fully functional working solutions”.
All nine students are also congratulated on their high standard of workmanship / commitment and ability to confidently convey their ideas to the judges by their teacher Mr. Robert Barton, Head of Design and Technology at the College.

A great level of skill and talent was on display by the large number of competitors during this years very successful St Joseph’s Boys’ High School sports day in Newry.
Many new records were set in most of the events and all who took part deserve great praise for their enthusiasm and determination.
Awards and presentations will take place in the school shortly for the overall winners, but well done to all who took part and made the day such an enjoyable event.

The end of the academic year at St Paul’s High School was marked with the celebration of Mass in thanksgiving for the work of two key members of staff who are retiring in August.
Chaplain of St Paul’s High School, V Rev Father Dermot Maloney, welcomed the staff to the celebration and extended a special welcome to Miss Margaret Keenan, and Mrs Josephine Conlon, and their families who were Guests of Honour.
Senior Teacher, Miss Margaret Keenan, who joined the staff in September 1972, is retiring after thirty-nine years of service to St Paul’s in the Mathematics and Science Departments.
Classroom Assistant, Mrs Josephine Conlon, who joined the staff of St Paul’s in 1988, is retiring after twenty-four years of service to the students of the Learning Support Centre at St Paul’s.
At a special Mass attended by all staff, and representatives of the student body, the Board of Governors and past staff, Principal of St Paul’s, Mr Oliver Mooney paid tribute to the significant contribution made by Miss Keenan and Mrs Conlon to the academic and pastoral lives of the school. Mr Mooney reflected on the large number of students who have been enriched by the work of Miss Keenan and Mrs Conlon, and that the endeavours of both ladies will be long remembered.
On behalf of the Archbishop of Armagh, the Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Governors of St Paul’s High School and concelebrant of the Mass of Thanksgiving, the Very Rev Father Seán Larkin presented Miss Margaret Keenan with the Medal of St Patrick in recognition of her long and outstanding service to education.
Miss Keenan and Mrs Conlon thanked colleagues for their good wishes, gifts and generosity. A special lunch with both ladies as Guests of Honour was served after the Mass.

Newry High School Pupils and Staff are celebrating their achievements in their A Levels after last Thursdays results.
“We are immensely proud of our 6th form pupils in their recent A2 level and AS level achievements”, said Fiona Pride, Principal of Newry High School. “The students have worked extremely hard throughout and deserve their success. I know that they are very appreciative of their teachers who have worked tirelessly to ensure that our students were very well prepared”, she continued.
“As of today 79% of students have achieved A* - C grades at A2 level and 99% of students achieved A* - E grades. In Art and Design and English Literature there were 100% A* - C grades. The Southern Regional College has reported that they are expecting a huge surge in demand for Further and Higher Education across all campuses. With ‘A’ level results out and GCSE results due this week the College stated that demand for college places has reached an unprecedented level.
In response to the demand for places last year the College recruited an additional 524 students and expects a similar position for the new academic year.
The Chief Executive of the College, Mr Brian Doran stated; “The College has once again experienced a significant increase in applications for full time courses for the new academic year. In anticipation of the demand for full time education the College has proactively encouraged applicants to apply early to secure a place on their chosen course, with many courses now operating lengthy waiting lists."
"The College will do everything to ensure that as many young people as possible are provided with the opportunity to continue in full time education. We are experiencing a similar situation to our two local universities with the demand for higher education exceeding the number of places provided to the College by the Government. This is a worrying situation and it is important that the community and local representatives support the College at every opportunity to secure an increased number of places in the future. "
"I would like to emphasise that the College offers a range of Degrees, Foundation Degrees, HNDs, HNCs and many professional courses on a part-time basis at the six campuses of Southern Regional College and this can be a more cost effective option for students, giving them the opportunity to earn and learn at the same time.”
The College is holding a ‘Clearing Day’ on Thursday 1 September at 2pm on all campuses to provide guidance to those students who are not accepted onto their preferred course of study and to facilitate transfer to other courses. To avoid disappointment students are advised to contact the Admissions Office without delay to secure a place at the College.

Southern Regional College Higher Education Graduates celebrated their success together with family, friends and staff at a prestigious Graduation Ceremony held at the Armagh City Hotel.
518 students were eligible to graduate from some of the 47 higher education courses available at the College. Degrees, Foundation Degrees, HND’s, HNC’s and many more professional qualifications were awarded to graduands from the College’s Armagh, Banbridge, Newry, Lurgan and Portadown Campuses.
Mr Brian Doran, Chief Executive of Southern Regional College welcomed the graduates and their family and friends. He paid tribute to their determination and dedication which he said brought great credit to each graduate and to the Southern Regional College.
“It is an honour to see you all here today, especially those of you for whom this rite of passage represents a culmination of several years’ hard work and application. Your presence here today demonstrates the important role that the College plays in diversifying the higher education system.” Mr Doran continued “The Southern Regional College remains committed to providing everyone, irrespective of social class or economic circumstances, with an equal opportunity to avail of higher education opportunities.
Southern Regional College was delighted to have received an annual student award of £5,000 from Norbrook Pharmaceuticals as well as two runner up prizes of £3,000 each. Mr Doran paid tribute to Lord Ballyedmond for his generosity in sponsoring the awards which he said provided much needed financial assistance for students progressing to Higher Education programmes.
The Norbrook Prize is awarded annually to a student of Southern Regional College completing a full time Further Education programme of study at Level 3 (e.g. A level equivalent). The prize is awarded to the individual who best demonstrates that they have the skills and attributes most relevant for future employment.
Ms Sharon Doran, Public Relations Manager at Norbrook Laboratories represented Lord Ballyedmond at the Graduation event and presented Michael Finan as the winner of this prestigious prize. The runner up prizes were presented to Antonia Gallagher and Kyle Robinson.
A new award at this years Graduation Ceremony is the BT Award For Excellence in Blended Learning. The BT Prize of an HP Tablet was awarded to an outstanding student who has successfully completed one of the Colleges blended learning courses.
Mr Colin Hay from BT presented the award to Daire O’Donnell who achieved grade A in the AS Business Studies through Blended Learning.
David Meade,from the BBC programme ‘The David Meade Experience’ and a former student of the Southern Regional College’s School of Hospitality and Tourism delivered the key note address and entertained the audience with his amazing mental illusions.
The Governing Body Chairman, Andrew Saunders closed the formal proceedings by congratulating the graduates and paid tribute to the support provided by family and friends.

St Joseph’s 4th year pupils received certificates and awards in recognition of the tremendous standard of work that had been produced throughout their time at KS3.
Special ‘Best in Subject’ awards were presented to pupils who excelled in the recent KS3 exam results.
These presentations were made by past teachers and special friends of the school.

Mr Hugh Mallon Principal from St Joseph’s Boys’ High School Newry was at Stormont to officially welcome PTA-NI to Northern Ireland.
St Joseph's Parents’ Association received ‘Gold Award’ status under the category of ‘Changing the life of the school’ as part of the regional awards last year.
Guests were welcomed by Sandra Overend MLA, herself an active PTA mum, who then introduced David Butler, PTA-UK Chief Executive. After the event David said “A very committed group of educational professionals were present at the PTA-NI launch event, which marked the next exciting chapter in the charity’s history. It was obvious that everyone present shared a deep-rooted passion for good education and learning and the event gave PTA-NI an opportunity to thank various stakeholders, not only for that passion but also the support they give to PTAs. In NI our membership in the last year alone, has grown by nearly 14% with a total membership just short of 20% of all schools. Our last member survey indicated that PTAs throughout the UK raised some £100 million and that the number of individual PTAs raising more than £10,000 grew to 22%. It is evident that PTAs are going from strength to strength and with PTA-NI’s continued support, PTAs in Northern Ireland can only achieve greater things.”
Mr Mallon appealed for many more local schools to get involved with PTA-NI.

Both the Abbey Christian Brother's School and Saint Colman's College have qualified for the final of the BT Young Scientist of the Year Competition Final which takes place later this evening. Each School haas two projects at the exhibition.
Projects are submitted under one of four categories: Technology; Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences; Biological and Ecological Sciences; and Social and Behavioural Sciences. A team of 80 judges from academia, business and the public sector will decide which projects win the 120 awards available at the event in the RDS this evening.
Education Minister, John O’Dowd, has congratulated local students who have taken part in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2012.
The exhibition, held in the RDS, Dublin, involves 550 projects by science students from right across Ireland, with over 120 awards made for the best entries. Thirty-two projects from 17 schools and one further education college in the north of Ireland qualified for this year’s event.
Speaking during a visit to the exhibition, Minister O’Dowd said: “The modern world is developing at great pace all the time and it is essential that Ireland is equipped to play its part economically, socially and technologically. The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is an excellent way to encourage our young people to get involved with, and enjoy, the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects that are so central to this vision.
“The event has been running for almost 50 years and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. This year entries were submitted from all 32 counties, with 550 projects gaining the chance to exhibit in Dublin. The standard is incredibly high and competition for prizes is keen, which only serves to drive the participants to improve.
“There is an immense energy in the exhibition hall, generated by the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the young people and the pride they clearly have in their projects. I am especially proud of the schools from the north that have qualified for the finals and am very encouraged that they are comfortably competing at this level.”
The Minister added: “These young scientists will go on to help shape our future society. My hearty congratulations go to every one of them for their efforts and I wish them the very best as they continue in their learning careers.”
This is the 48th year of the event and the 12th year with BT as chief sponsor and organiser. The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2012 received 1,743 entries from 355 schools in 32 counties. Schools from the north submitted 75 projects from 32 schools.
