Write a commentThe Old Newry Society is 50 Years old in 2018 and to celebrate they are holding their 50th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday 28th April at the Canal Court Hotel.

The society held their first meeting 29 May 1968 after a lecture on 'sources of local history' by Brian Traynor, Public records Office where John Bell, President of Abbey CBS Past Pupils Union raised the question of forming a society 'for the purpose of gathering and preserving interesting items of Newry's past'
The society was formed on the spot with Kevin P. Newry elected as Chairman. Other members of the committee included Dr Padraig Quinn, Vice Chairman; P.A. Crinion, Hon Secretary; Matt McAteer Hon Treasurer. Committee: Una McClafferty, Nora Cooper, Rev R.S. Peters, Rev William McMillan, G. Wilson Reside, Jim McCart, Rev John McAnuff, Eugene Boyle, J Bell, Sean McAteer, Sean Canavan, B'O'Hare and Dr J.J. Fitzsimmons and Kieran McAteer.
