Write a commentPolice are warning business owners to be alert following three incidents of fraud in Newry and Downpatrick over the bank holiday weekend.
The reported incidents involved a man who requested £300 be loaded onto a top-up type credit card. Staff carried out the transaction and the customer left the premises on the pretence of visiting the ATM or going to their car and didn’t return. In all three incidents the staff member retained the credit card however it appears that the customer used a cloned card to withdraw the £300 a short time later.
The incidents occurred in a convenience store in Newry on Saturday 30 April and at a service station and supermarket in Downpatrick on Monday, 2 May. The man involved in one of the incidents is described as being around 5ft 10in tall , aged in his 20s, with a round face and light stubble. He spoke with a Southern Irish accent.
Police would like businesses to be vigilant of this type of activity. If possible, take payment before debiting money onto a top-up card. If you are suspicious of a transaction or believe you have been targeted in this way, please contact police immediately on 101.
