Keeping your Sheds secure

The PSNI have issued some advice to help people keep their sheds secure following a number of shed burglaries over the last few weeks.

Crime Prevention Officer, Lisa Sherman said: “We often focus on making our homes secure and forget about protecting the property we store outside the home. There are a few ways you can make your shed more secure:

“Make access to rear of your property as difficult as possible.

“Use external security lighting to deter burglars.

“Visibly mark the contents of your shed to deter burglars. Take notes of serial numbers and photograph expensive equipment.

“Use strong shed bars and closed shackle padlocks.

“Secure windows with locks and grilles.”

The Crime Prevention Officer also took the opportunity to remind motorists to secure their vehicles and remove all valuables when they are leaving their car unattended.

She said: “Thefts from cars and vehicles are largely opportunistic so by taking the following steps you can reduce the possibility of being targeted.

“Never leave your car unlocked.

“Never leave your home or office keys anywhere in your car.

“Do not leave personal property or valuables in clear view.

“If you do have to store property, place it in the boot.

“Avoid leaving your vehicle in an under-used or unattended car park.”
