Write a commentA 26 year old man has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment after pleading guilty to burglary and theft.
The male was arrested by police on Monday, 3 December, 2012. Police had received a number of reports of burglary and thefts from vehicles in Newry City Centre on Sunday and Monday, 2 and 3 December.
A shop at Buttercrane Shopping Centre was entered on Sunday, 2 December. CCTV captured a male entering the store under a shutter. A wallet was taken from the shop.
On Monday, 3 December, police received two reports of vehicles being entered on Hill Street. A dress, shoes and house and car keys were taken from one vehicle and a small sum of cash was taken from the second vehicle.
A number of businesses were also burgled on 3 December.
Staff at a dental surgery on Mary Street found a male trespassing and challenged him. He made off and staff discovered that cash had been taken.
Documentation was taken from property services premises and cash was stolen from staff lockers in a cafe on Hill Street.
The 26 year old male was arrested by police in The Mall area of Newry around 3pm on the same day. His clothing matched the descriptions of the male involved in the previous incidents and officers stopped and searched him. They seized a quantity of cash, both loose and in money bags and also a key.
He was interviewed by detectives from Newry's Reducing Offending Unit before being charged.
The male appeared before Newry Crown Court on 9 October, 2013 and pleaded guilty to four offences of burglary and two of thefts from vehicles. He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment.
At the request of police, the Judge ordered that all monies stolen should be returned to the injured parties and a donation of £100 be made to local addiction charity Cuan Mhuire.
