Some time between 3pm on Monday, 18 February and 12pm on Tuesday, 19 February, 71 manhole covers were taken from the A1 carriageway between the Forkhill roundabout and the border with the Republic of Ireland.
Constable Kenny, Newry Response, said: "Quite apart from the money needed to replace manhole covers, the thefts are creating a danger to roadusers. Stealing manhole covers is the action of criminals who put their own profit before the wellbeing and lives of people in our community."
Police are appealing to anyone who travelled on the carriageway between these times and noticed any suspicious activity to contact them at Ardmore Police Station on 0845 600 8000 Ext 35202.
