Write a commentSRC's Boys Team from Newry Campus recently won the Electric Ireland HE GAA Corn Comhairle Ardoideachais Final in Mallow, County Cork.
The boys beat Mary Immaculate College Thurles SRC 4-15 Mary Immaculate College 1-06.
The fantastic win follows a great semi-final win against Monaghan Institute and is the culmination of a great campaign, masterminded by coaches Stephen Ferris and Rory McGreevy and spearheaded by Captain, Dylan McKenna. Dean Rice was awarded Player of the Match after the game. This is the first time the college have played Higher Education football in 4 years and it is their first All Ireland win in 6 years.
Having lost the toss the SRC men were playing against a gale force breeze in the first half against a strong MIC Thurles team. The first ten minutes saw both teams exchanging points but, after great work down the left hand side, the SRC men grabbed a goal through Lyndon Brown.
For the rest of the first half the team fought extremely hard without the ball to stop MIC from taking advantage with the wind and made several key turnovers in dangerous areas. They grabbed two more goals before half time through Ryan McEvoy and Dean Rice to leave the halftime score 3-3 to 0-5.
In the second half with the wind at their backs the team kept working the ball well through the hands into scoring positions and picked off their points to establish a commanding lead. However, MIC hit back with a goal midway through the second half from a rebound after an excellent save from the SRC keeper Locky Leneghan. That was the only score they managed to get in the second half as the SRC defended well and kept the scoreboard ticking over with points.
The men finished the game strong and scored a goal in the last minute through Ryan McEvoy (taking his personal tally to 2-10) to leave the final score, Southern Regional College: 4-16 MIC Thurles 1-5.
