2 points and local bragging rights were at stake in Pairc Esler on Friday night as the senior men took on Shamrocks. Thankfully the Bosco men left with both.
A dour low scoring encounter didn't inspire the spectators but that didn't matter to Marty lynch and the management team as they secured a league victory over their local rivals for the first time in 20 years. Decky Morgan got the Bosco’s first score of 2014 and Lee Ruddy, Gavy moan (2) Francie Downey and Eamon Murphy added scores. A 6 points to 2 lead at the break looked slender enough facing a breeze in the second half. Bosco added only one point in the second half but a superb defensive performance yielded only 2 shamrocks points resulting in a 0.7 to 0.4 victory.
Credit to newly appointed captain Ethan Toner and his full back line colleagues Robbie Mc Donald and Fergie Lavery for excellent performances. Larry McAlinden also saved a penalty twice after the ref ordered it to be retained.
Work to be done in the forward line but a solid start to the new campaign.

St John Bosco vs. Attical Monday 7th April Jack Mackin Park

The senior team picked up another 2 points on Monday night at the expense of Attical. On a perfect night for football Bosco started brightly but as with the previous week scores were hard to come by with the wide count more than keeping pace with the score board. But the points eventually started to come with Gavy Moan, Eamon Murphy and lee ruddy among the scorers.
Attical funnelled plenty of men behind the ball and tried to work short kick outs to keep the dominant Chris Duggan and Conal Gallagher out of the game. They then attacked in numbers and at speed and although they caused some problems the home team’s defence once again stood up to the challenge. Half time had the Bosco men 0.8 to 0.3 ahead. Attical started the second half strongly and got the first point. Bosco responded well and notched 4 points in a row to regain control with Paddy Magill and Decky Byrne prominent. However there was still a deal of possession being wasted and the Attical counter attacks yielded a couple of points followed by a goal that had a strong suspicion of over carrying about it. The gap was down to 3 points but the Bosco lads were not to be denied.
A wonder point from sub Francie Downey and another excellent score from Decky Morgan settled the nerves and left the final score 0.16 to 1.08.

St John Bosco U16 Girls
St John Bosco U16 Girls vs. Down U14s Sunday 13th April 2014
St Colman’s was the venue for a challenge match between the Bosco u16 girls and the Down u14 girls as part of their preparations for their forthcoming championship match against Armagh on 27th April 2014.
On this occasion the four Bosco players who play for the Down team turned out for their Club and contributed to an excellent and competitive game.
In the end the stronger and more physical Bosco u16 team won by 5 points but both management teams will take some useful learning points from the match.
St John Bosco U12 Girls
St John Bosco vs. St Peter’s Warrenpoint Wednesday 9th April 2014
With almost all the successful U12 girls’ team from last year graduating to U14s, a new and very young u12 team played their first match against Warrenpoint at St Colman’s. Ten of the starting team was U10s.
Despite this the team played some great football with Ciarrai Lavery and Aimee O’Hanlon competing well at midfield and Chloe Quinn and Iona Reynolds taking some excellent scores in the 1st half. In defence there were good performances from Clara Osborne, Maria Medeoit and Victoria Brudlo. The game was very competitive and entertaining for the large crowd of parents in attendance

Five Bosco U14 girls competed for Ballyholland Harps in the recent Camogie Féile held at the Abbey Grammar School in Newry. The team also includes four Saval u14 players
U12’s St John Bosco vs. Saval
St John Bosco vs. Saval Sunday 6th April Saval
A fine Sunday morning on a bumpy Saval pitch that the Bosco boys took a while to get used to was the setting for the latest outing of the U12 team. With mentor Peadar Gallagher away in Donegal it was left to Kevin, Paul, David and Hugh to sort out the team. With 2 sessions of 15 minutes at 11 a side followed up with 2 sessions of 15 minutes at 15 a side this was a real hour’s treat of football for all players, mentors and spectators concerned.
With Jack White, Patrick Ruddy, Nathan Gribben, Ryan Shields and Rowan Toner all out through illness and injury the mentors had to re-jig the positions in order to cover the gaps.
This was a solid display from the U12’s against a bigger stronger Saval team with the men in amber and blue standing up to the mark and getting a well earned result.
Next up for the U12’s is a home blitz on Sunday 27th in Jack Mackin park at 10:30 a.m.
Bosco G4M
Bosco G4M&O coach Mo Rooney along with players Lorna Copeland and Roisin Hart travelled to the St. Maurs club in Rush Co. Dublin to take part in the G4M&O training and information evening. The evening was organised to inform clubs about changes currently taking place to improve and encourage participation in Gaelic Games. Mo stated that the trip to Dublin was worthwhile as not only did the Bosco party get the chance to learn firsthand of the changes but the opportunity to meet coaches and players from other G4M&O teams was vital as all of the teams got a chance to swap contact numbers and arrange future matches.

Newry City Marathon
It’s coming to that time of the year again, time to get the runners and lycra out and get into training. The club has been asked again to provide marshals for the ever popular Newry City Marathon.
With a new route planned for this year – to Warrenpoint and back all marshals will have to undergo training in order to ensure all H&S aspects are covered.
