Down Intermediate Ladies Championship Final
Bosco 0-11 Mayobridge 2-9
Bosco Ladies travelled to a boiling hot Clonduff on Saturday hoping to lift the Down ladies Intermediate Championship but Mayobridge had their own eyes on the title. Mo Rooneys team where confident going into the final but knew Mayobridge would be a massive hurdle to overcome and so it was clear when then Sky Blues took an early 1-2 to no score lead but the Newry girls battled back to make it 1-2 to 0-4 after 20 minutes and looked well in place to take the lead into halftime but the Mayobridge girls rode their luck and slotted over another few points before the Bosco girls rallied late on in the 1st half to leave 4 points in it at half time.
The Bosco ladies needed a good start but a couple of heavy knocks and late tackles forced them into making changes and every time the Bosco girls looked like getting back into the game the Mayobridge girls just seemed to get the rub of the green and continued to slot over the points. True to their fighting and battling form the Bosco girls showed all year the fought back again and with minutes left trailed by 4 points but no matter how hard they tried to get the vital goals the Mayobridge defence threw themselves at everything the Bosco had. At the final whistle it was clear form the Bosco,s body language that the girls had left everything on the pitch.
Speaking after the match Mo Rooney whilst dejected at the defeat praised his young team and highlighted that it took Mayobridge 4 years to win an Intermediate Championship and for his team to reach the final in its 1st year in the Intermediate League was nothing short of brilliant.
Mo went on to thank fellow coaches Pat and Maria Fox and the teams merry band of supporters who have travelled all over the County this season to watch the girls.
Club Chairman Joe Ryan spoke with the girls after the match and stated how proud he was at how far they have come in the last 3 years, he thanked them for their commitment to the club and the effort they all have put in and reassured them that another County Championship wont be long arriving.
Hard luck ladies, keep your heads up.
St John Bosco U14s
Bosco under 14 boys played their second championship game at home to Attical last Monday evening. This was a do or die game for both teams and proved to be a very even and exciting game.
Bosco opened the scoring with points from Ruairi Lavery and Rory Mc Parland. Attical responded with a few points of their own. With both teams going for all out attack the game flowed from end to end, both sides fought hard and there was no one giving an inch. Goals from Dean Morgan and Ryan Mc Aleavey seemed to give Bosco the edge but Attical got a goal before halftime to keep in touch. Halftime score Bosco 2-07 to 1-06.
The second half didn't start well for Bosco with Attical dominant in the first 10 minutes to the extent that our lead was wiped out. Bosco finally woke up and a goal from Kane Rossiter steadied the ship. The teams traded points before a second Kane Rossiter goal gave Bosco breathing space. Attical continued to work hard but the Bosco boys now had the bit between their teeth. Further scores from Dean Morgan(goal) Ruairi Lavery (goal) ensured a 6 point victory, final score Bosco 5-10 to Atticals 2-13.
Bosco now face Ballyholland in the semi-final on Monday 2nd September in Ballyholland, throw in 6.45pm

U12 Girls triumph at Burren Tournament

The Bosco u12 girls carried their excellent league form into the first of a number of County Tournaments held in Burren on Saturday. In the initial league format Bosco recorded comprehensive wins over Saval and Clonduff and in the other side of the draw the hosts Burren accounted for Rostrevor and Kilcoo to set up the final that most people wanted to see.
The teams had met twice this year in the league with Bosco having the upper hand on each occasion, but only narrowly.
In the early stages Bosco recorded two excellent points from Chloe Quinn and Nicola Downey. Burren, however, with strong home support responded quickly and following an interception in the midfield found the net to lead by one. The Bosco girls refused to panic and after some great work at the back by Eden Casey, the ball was moved quickly to Captain Aine McCabe on the right wing. The Burren backs were slow to close her down and Aine unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner to restore a 2 point lead.
The quality of these two teams was evident throughout the pitch and Burren added a point from a short free and then capitalised on some slack defending by Bosco for another to tie the game up at 1.02 each.
With the game heading for stalemate and extra time looming a piece of brilliance was required by someone. Bosco gained possession in midfield via Aine McCabe and the ball was threaded out to Aoibheann Quinn on the right wing. Aoibheann soled the ball along the sideline and from the narrowest of angles slotted the ball over the bar. The final whistle was greeted by celebrations among the Bosco players, mentors and parents and a very proud Aine McCabe stepped up to collect the Margaret King Cup.
BOSCO U12 GIRLS TOURNAMENT NEXT SATURDAY
Fresh from the success in Burren, the Club’s annual u12 girls tournament takes place next Saturday 31st August starting at 10.30am. Eight teams are attending and two trophies will be played for at Jack Mackin Park.
Clan na Gael and Dromintee from County Armagh will add an extra dimension to the day and any help from members would be appreciated. The club will make use of the Whitegates community centre and will provide refreshments for all players and parents.

Saturday 24th August P5/P6 Blitz venue Jack Mackin Park.
7 clubs with 14 teams of Gaels and Ógs competing this was a real festival of underage football. Refereed by An Riocht youth referees John and Michael O’Rourke points the blitz provided 26 games of great sportsmanship played in excellent conditions on a pitch in great condition. These competitions organised by the County Board provide a great stage upon which our young stars can be of their best.
With several players missing through injury, holidays and the scourge of Newry Gaelic – soccer, St John Bosco could still field 18 players and two teams. The lads, especially Guy Wallage, Dessie McAleavy, Joe Hanna and Josh Hanna played some of their best football ever in the Bosco amber and blue colours and had a great day out.
Next up for the U10’s is a home match on Wednesday evening in St Colman’s at 7:00 p.m. against An Riocht.
Sunday 11th August Club day at the Races
A great day out at the races in Downpatrick in good weather and in good company, even some of the Bosco punters came away with a few pound in their pockets. Many thanks to Bar One Racing and Campbell Racing for sponsoring the free bets which helped to add a spark to the event.
Wednesday 18th September Golden Jubilee Table Quiz
The St John Bosco GAC are launching a new Player’s Injury Fund to help offset expenses and loss of wages experienced by senior players due to injury sustained whilst playing for their club. To get the fund of to a flying start a table quiz will be held on Wednesday 18th September in the Canal Court Hotel. So get your teams organised and let’s ensure the night is a great success.

St John Bosco GFC Golden Jubilee Black Tie Ball is in Millers Suite, Canal Court Hotel, Newry, on Friday 25th October 2013 with tickets priced at £40. The evening will commence with a champagne reception in hotel foyer at 7:00pm
