Underage Football Planning Night Monday 4th November
A special meeting in the Social Club has been organised for tonight Monday 4th November at 7.30 p.m. to review underage football in the club, to look at coaching, to discuss player recruitment, to look at ways we can improve the structures, to examine our strengths/weaknesses etc. All members, supporters and especially mentors (past, present & future) and interested members are urged to attend this very important meeting.
U12 Girls Represent Down
The St John Bosco GAC U12 Girls represented Down in a challenge game against Monaghan last Saturday 2nd November at the newly opened Tyrone Centre of Excellence.
Leo Hughes Memorial Shield 29th September 2013
This year for the U16’s could be described as going in fits and starts, some great wins in the league and gut wrenching losses when the Bosco should have been out of sight. The account for the Division 2 league stood at 4 wins and 6 losses and a mid-table finishing berth.
The Championship proved a little contentious with Bosco being nominated to play in the ‘A’ group so this was going to be a tough draw. Nevertheless after a slow opening first half against Mayobridge the Bosco lads fought back from 11 points down and only lost this game by the narrowest of margins.
It was important then that this group of players showed that they can deliver good, full match performances and not just the odd good half and the Leo Hughes Shield was the last opportunity to do that and secure silverware in 2013.
Thomas Davis GAG Corrinshego V St. John Bosco GAC
The opening game saw Bosco take on Corrinshego and after a jittery start by both teams it was Corrinshego who opened the score from a free after Adam Rowntree was deemed to have committed the foul. Bosco’s first attack also secured a free which saw Matthew McKevitt’s effort drift to the left and wide.
It was up to Gary Crummy to settle nerves for Bosco when he powered through the opposition defence and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Seamus Brady was excellent in nets for Bosco and throughout this contest the Bosco defence kept him well covered. Further goals followed for Bosco from Martin Keenan and an excellent link up between Matthew and Gary Crummy saw Bosco net goal number 3, excellent points flowed from the boots of Jordan Pinnington, Caoilte Jackson (Capt.) and Joshua Monroe. By half time Bosco were in control and unlike some earlier games this year, they never relinquished their lead and ran out worthy semi-final winners.
Saval GAC V Carrickcruppen GAC
In the other semi, Saval fell to the sword of hosts Carrickcruppen in an entertaining and flowing game, where Carrickcruppen’s superior fielding and forwards shooting ability saw them emerge victorious to face Bosco.
Final St John Bosco vs Carrickcruppen
Bosco’s Oisin Carnegie and Micheal Dillon took control of matters in the middle of the field in this contest and forwards Martin Keenan, Devin Quigley and Jordan Pinnington all gave excellent displays of smart football. The Carrickcruppen attack which was so effective against Saval had a torrid time dealing with this Bosco defence. Aidan MacNamara and Daire Rooney were very strong in the wing half back and harried tirelessly delivering accurate, quality ball to the Bosco forwards. It was this pattern of turnover and fast, direct counterattack that allowed Bosco to dominate matters between the two 45’s.
Defenders Ciaran Burns, Lucas Rossiter and David Magee also deserve mention as do forwards Devin Quigley who slotted over a couple of superb points from tight angles. The U14’s also deserve a special mention and credit for their support on the day.
There were numerous examples of good link up play and manly, sporting football delivered by all participants at this tournament and it was St. John Bosco who secured the win on a final scoreline of:

Following the final the Hughes family presented the Leo Hughes Memorial Shield to Bosco Captain, Caoilte Jackson who spoke eloquently in his acceptance. Carrickcruppen, who were wonderful hosts and sporting runners up, then provided tea, sandwiches and snacks which the boys and coaches gladly devoured!
