Armagh Co. Junior Championship First Round

Friday 1st August 2014

Pearse Ogs 1-9 Thomas Davis Corrinshego 2-6

Thomas Davis travelled to the Keeley Park Silverbridge on Friday  with a much depleted squad due to both mounting injuries and holiday/work commitments, however  the team which represented the club gave a spirited and determined display over the hour. With Gerald O’Reilly manning the square it was the  simple strategy up using Gerald as a target and within 4minutes this simple tactical plan paid off when Jordan King blasted to the net from  a G. O’Reilly knockdown.

Some four minutes later  former Irish league soccer player Shea Campbell  responded for the Ogs with a fine point. On 10mins P. Finnegan  pointed from a free to extend the lead.  With  both Junior Championship debutants  Lee Courtney and Brendan McKinley  winning  a lot of  ball  it was only a matter of time before  Corrinshego scored again and on 14mins D. Murphy  scored a goal from a G. O’Reilly lob.  Pearse Og’s responded with two  points through Declan Mc Auley , who  actually played half-back when the Og’s last won the senior championship. On 21mins D. Murphy scored another point for the Newry men after been set up by B. McKinley to lead  2-2 to 0-3.  However , the Og’s responded with a well taken goal.

On 24mins  G. O’Reilly was hauled down when in position of the ball and Phelim Finnegan pointed the resultant free. Moments later Gerald again was fouled and referee Paul Boylan awarded another free which P. Finnegan pointed to extend the lead  2-4 to  1-3. The Og’s to their credit battled away and added two pointed frees  to leave two points between the sides at half-time.

On the resumption, Thomas Davis  playing into a slight breeze and ‘up-hill’  scored  within 30seconds of the restart with a point through the boot of Danny Cinnamond. The  men from Armagh City kept plugging away and scored 0-3 in a five minute spell to take a one point lead.  With both Mark and John Bradshaw battling hard in defence and D. Lenaghan and B. McKinley  at midfield, Jordan King scored a fantastic point from out on the right which appeared to be the winner. To their credit the Og’s responded immediately and on the stroke of full time pointed a 21m free to level the game. A draw was probably a deserved  result for both sides.

It has been announced that the replay will take place next Sunday at 6pm in Silverbridge, with V. O’ Neill as referee.

Under 16 Girls / Peil na mBan Faoi 16

The u16 girls travelled to Mullabrack on Thursday night to them on in the semi-final of the championship. This was always going to be an uphill task, and so it proved as Mullabrack ran out comfortable winners. There was no lack of effort from the Corrinshego ladies who contested every ball and made their opposition work hard for their win. There were some great performances especially from Leah McLoughlin and Nicole Mc Cann who worked tirelessly along with Danielle McClorey. Millie Kinney was solid in nets as usual and special mention must go to Aimeelee Mc Shane who had an outstanding game but it was Toni Finnegan who just takes the plaudits and earned her herself "player of the week" with her best performance of the season so far.
