This weekend ten years ago history was made in Croke Park when two Ulster teams met in the All Ireland Senior Football Championship Final for the first time ever.
Old rivals Tyrone took on Armagh on Sunday the 28th of September 2003 in front of a crowd of nearly 80.000.
This was enabled by the introduction of the qualifying or Back Door system introduced in 2001 and it happened at a time when Ulster sides were the dominant football force for a brief spell in GAA history.
It also went down in history (sadly from Armagh's point of view) as the first All Ireland Senior Football Championship win ever for Tyrone!
Tyrone had won the Ulster Football Final with a victory over Down while Armagh took the Back Door route after losing out to Monaghan in the Ulster preliminary round.
It wasn't to be Armagh's game with Diarmuid Marsden being sent off in the second half. This coupled with Steven McDonnell's last ditch goal attempt in the dying minutes of the second half which was blocked by Conor Gormley!
It just wasn't to be and Tyrone emerged victorious winning by 0:12 to Armagh's 0:9.
Looking back is always tinged with sadness and in this case not because of the result but some things much more important. Tyrone All Star player Cormac McAnallen in number 3 died suddenly just six months later, a week after he captained Tyrone to victory in the Dr McKenna Cup and Michella McAreavey, daughter of Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte, always present by her fathers side who was murdered nearly three years ago on her honeymoon in Maritius.
