McNulty calls for Commonwealth Youth Games support

A lack of funding could mean that the proposed Commonwealth Youth Games due to take place here in 2021 won't happen. That's according to MLA, Justin McNulty, SDLP Spokesperson for Sport. The MLA has written to Prime Minister Theresa May in relation to the ongoing issues.

He said:

“There is a strong possibility that the Commonwealth Youth Games, which were due to take place in Northern Ireland in 2021, may not go ahead due to lack of funding. I have written to the Prime Minister today to express support from the SDLP for the Games and the importance of them being held here in 2021.

“We are once again faced with a situation where the continued political in-fighting between Sinn Fein and the DUP is impacting upon people in Northern Ireland. With no functioning institutions or Ministers in place, there is no Minister to direct funding towards the Games.

Mr McNulty concluded that It would be a huge disappointment, both for the Commonwealth Youth Games and for the North, if the Games were not to proceed here. "These Games present a great opportunity to invest in our young people and could also have an extremely positive impact upon the tourism industry here.”
