Newry AC may have had fewer events this week but the quality of performances outweighed quantity over track, trail and mountain.

SLIEVE DONARD MOUNTAIN RACE, NEWCASTLE

On Saturday morning Esther Dickson, Rory Mulvaney and Warren Cartmill joined 164 runners in the annual Slieve Donard Race.  This was a 6.2 mile race with 2,800 feet of ascent - the route started and finished at the Newcastle Centre and took the runners through Donard Forest, up the Glen Valley river to the saddle where they then ascended Slieve Donard, at the summit descent was via Thomas Quarry returning through the Forest to the finish. The weather was perfect - warm and dry but ground conditions were wet and slippery in sections after the rain, hail and snow during the week.

Esther Dickson had an impressive run finishing 1st female (11 minutes ahead of the 2nd female, Mari Troeng) and 10th overall.  This was a very strong performance by Esther who currently leads the NIMRA and Hill & Dales 2019 series, proven by the fact that she had the 4th overall fastest descent from the Summit to the finish line of 19:29.
