Following Thursday night’s IFA Disciplinary Committee Hearing in Belfast, Newry City Football Club wish to outline that we accept the suspension of two games and fine of £75 imposed on our player Cullen Feeney as a result of said hearing. However, we intend to appeal the fine of £800 levied on the club as we feel that it is totally disproportionate to our perceived level of involvement and the body of evidence submitted following the incidents during the JJB Sport Irish Cup fifth round tie on Saturday, January 16th 2010.
For the record Newry City FC had 1 (one) player disciplined whilst Larne had 5 players + their Manager disciplined yet the committee could see fit to apportion a large percentage of the blame on Newry City FC, as indicated by the level of the fine imposed. We also dismayed that the Larne substitute photographed stamping on Cullen Feeney has escaped punishment.
The club, as a matter of principal and in defence of our players injured during these incidents intend exhausting all legal avenues to ensure the good name of Newry City FC is not tarnished any further. As a result, the club will be submitting an appeal to the IFA today (February 12th 2010) on the issue of the fine imposed on the club. Pending that appeal, Newry City Football Club will not be issuing any further statement at this time.
