Senior Men

Our senior men made the best possible start to the new season with a convincing fourteen-point win over Wolfe Tones, 5 – 14 to 1 – 12.

Played in perfect weather conditions it was a very even opening to the game with both sides level at four points apiece after twenty minutes with the Shane’s scores coming from Paul O’Rourke (2), Greg McCabe and Ryan Quinn. A fantastic long-range effort from Raymie Fitzpatrick gave the Shane’s a narrow advantage and same player followed up almost immediately with another brilliant point to put two between the sides for the first time in the game. A pointed Wolfe Tones free, their third of the half, got them back to within one before a great effort from Paul O’Rourke crept over the keeper’s head to nestle in the back of the net and give his side a four-point advantage. The home team increased this to seven soon after when long ball forward resulted in David McCabe being hauled down in the square and he picked himself up, dusted himself down and fired home the resulting penalty. Ryan Quinn followed this up with a well taken point to see the Shane’s lead by eight going into added time at the end of the opening half before but another pointed free from Wolfe Tones saw them trail by seven at the break.

The away side got the first point of the second-half before great flowing move saw the Shane’s raise their third green flag when second-half substitute Connaire Mackin calmly slotted the ball to the corner of the net. The sides then swapped points with Ryan McCabe popping over for the Shane’s before great work from Greg McCabe saw him find Matthew Girvan who calmly flicked the ball home for the Camlough side’s fourth goal of the contest. A free from Wolfe Tones was quickly cancelled out by another Ryan McCabe effort as the Shane’s led by twelve points and were totally in control of proceedings but three points on the trot from the away side reduced the deficit to nine. The Shane’s upped their game again and Micheál Brady slotted over their tenth point before Connaire Mackin fired home his second and the Shane’s fifth goal of the game to all but seal the win. The Shane’s continued to dominate and three points on the spin from the impressive Paul O’Rourke saw the Shane’s lead by sixteen points with less than five minutes left on the clock. With the game in injury time Wolfe Tones managed to bag themselves a goal but the Shane’s recorded the last score of the contest with Cormac Feely firing over from close range to leave the final score 5 – 14 to 1 – 12.

U14 Boys

A battling performance from our U14 boy’s amalgamation of Patrick Rankin’s on Saturday saw them qualify for the Féile Shield with a six-point win over Silverbridge. The young Rankin’s led by four points in the opening stages of the game but Silverbridge battled their way back into the game and midway the first -half the sides were level pegging. Two points in a row put the Rankin’s back in front but two late points from Silverbridge saw the sides go in level at the break – Patrick Rankin’s 1- 3  Silverbridge 0 – 6.

Three quick fire points from the Rankin’s in the opening minutes of the second-half gave the home side a decent advantage but Silverbridge responded in kind with three of their own to tie the game again. A second Patrick Rankin’s goal put them three to the good again before the sides swapped a point apiece to leave the game in the melting pot going into the closing stages but a late goal sealed the win for the young Rankin’s on a score-line of 3 – 7 to 0 – 10.

The lads now find themselves in the Féile Shield against Loughgilly Gaels with the game scheduled for next Saturday, 6th April at 12 noon in Crossmaglen and we asking everyone to come along and give the lads your support.
