A disappointing performance from our senior men on Friday night saw them lose heavily at home to Tullysaran, 3 – 11 to 0 – 6.
Tullysaran dominated the opening twenty minutes of the game and found themselves 3 – 4 to 0 – 0 before the Shanes managed their first shot on target with Kristian Magill scoring a good point. Kristian Magill fired over another two points before the sides swapped scores with Ryan McCabe on target for the Shanes. A further two Tullysaran points before the break saw them go in at half-time leading by twelve, 3 – 7 to 0 – 4.
Tullysaran continued to play the better football in the second-half and the Shanes only managed a further two scores, both pointed frees from Kristian Magill whilst the away side tagged on another four points to claim a fully deserved win.
The Shanes have one league game remaining, at home to Middletown on Wednesday 10th August before they meet Mullaghabwn in the championship on Sunday 21st August.
Senior Ladies
The senior ladies were in devastating form on Wednesday night when they comprehensively overcame Crossmaglen in the championship semi-final on a score-line of 8 – 21 to 0 – 8.
The girls went into an early four point lead with the scores coming from Aimee Mackin (0 – 2), Aoibheann Jones (0 – 1) and Blaithin Mackin (0 – 1). Crossmaglen then got their first point of the game before the Shanes hit 1- 4 without reply, with the goal coming from Aimee Mackin and points from the Mackin and Jones sisters. A second point from Crossmaglen soon followed but the Shanes extended their advantage with goals from Aoibheann and Ciara Jones and points from Aimee and Blaithin Mackin with Crossmaglen registering a third point just before the break.
The Shanes began the second-half with a scoring blitz, netting a further three goals and a point with the Mackin sisters getting the goals and a well taken point from the boot of Claire Garvey. A fourth Crossmaglen point was followed by two in a row from the Shanes with the Mackins once again on target before the away side replied with their fifth point of the game. A point from Blaithin Mackin and two from Aoibheann Jones kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shanes with Crossmaglen replying once more with another well taken point. Two Aimee Mackin points were followed up by a goal each from Aoibheann Jones and Jessica Watters before the Cross girls registered another good score. Moya Feehan then got in on the scoring act with a nicely taken score before second-half substitute Lisa Devlin fired over a good point which was quickly followed by another Aimee Mackin point. This proved to be the Shanes final score of the game but to their credit Crossmaglen battled hard right to the end and they registered the final point of the contest.
The Shanes now meet Sarsfields in the Intermediate championship final on Sunday 28th August in the Athletic Grounds.
Minor Boys
Our minor boys recorded a good away win over Cullyhanna last Monday night, 2 – 11 to 0 – 7. The sides swapped two points apiece in the opening ten minutes of the game with the Shanes scores coming from Tommy Rickard and Conor Magee. Two pointed frees from Matthew Girvan and Conor Magee eased the Shanes ahead by two before Cullyhanna responded with their third point of the half but a late Tommy Rickard saw the Shanes lead by two at the break.
The Shanes lads made a great start to the second period , scoring 2 – 1 in the opening ten minutes with Paddy Garvey getting a goal and a point with the other goal coming from Conor Magee. The Shanes led by nine at this stage but Cullyhanna reduced the deficit to eight soon after with their fourth point of the game but points from Matthew Girvan and Conor Magee kept the Shanes in control. The sides swapped points with Conor Magee again on target for the Camlough side before Cullyhanna hit two points in row but the Shanes finished the stronger and two further points from Damian O’Hagan and Conor Magee saw them claim the win.
U16 Girls
The U16 girls are through to the U16 "A" championship final following a good semi-final win over Clan na Gael on Sunday last. There were strong performances all over the field with Sorcha McDonnell top scorer. Next up for the girls is a home game against Crossmaglen on Monday night, 1st August at 7.00pm.
U14 Boys
Our U14 boys amalgamation of St Malachy’s were in action last Tuesday night at home to O’Doirnin Blues. Played in atrocious weather conditions both sets of players served up a good game of football but it was the Blues who ran out deserving winners but the young St Malachy’s players continued battling right to the end and were rewarded with goals from Lewis Boswell and James Marron. The lads are scheduled to travel to Madden this coming Tuesday evening for their next league game.
Meabh O’Neill’s Camogie
Well done to the U12 camogs who recorded a fine home win over Derrymacash on Saturday. The girls have played some great camogie throughout the year and have remained unbeaten – well done girls. The club are planning to host another car-boot sale next Sunday, 7th August from 11.00am – 3.00pm, weather permitting. Cars and small vans will cost £5.00 with large vans costing £10.00. The Qube
The club is hosting a major fundraising event in the marquee in the club grounds between Thursday 18th August and Sunday 21st August. The events include Shane's Summer Blowout over 18s disco on Friday 19th and The Qube on Saturday 20th.
The week-end of events is a major undertaking for the club and we are appealing to all club members, parents, players and friends of the club to get involved and to help out in any way they can to help ensure that week-end runs as smooth as possible.
To continue with the planning for the event a meeting will take place in the clubhouse on Thursday night, 4th August at 8.00pm for one hour. If you have an hour to spare on Thursday we would appreciate your attendance at the meeting, as the old saying goes - "many hands make light work".
Next Saturday night, 6th August sees the launch night for The Qube take place in the club at 9.00pm. The night itself will include an introduction to the contestants taking part in the event and the opportunity to sample some of the games planned for the big night on 20th August. Everyone is welcome to come along next Saturday night for what should be a good night’s craic with a couple of drinks promotions on offer.

Friday 19th August: Shanes Summer Blow-Out Disco (over 18s) from 9.30pm – 1.30am. Tickets are priced at £7.00
Saturday 20th August: The Qube. Tickets are priced at £10.00 or €12.00
Sunday 21st August: An evening music session with local group Village Folk
Tickets for the Shanes Summer Blow-Out Disco (in conjunction with the Myeloma Charity) and The Qube (in conjunction with The Fight On Campaign for Séanín) are available from any committee member.
Player Injury Fund
The club is holding a night this coming Friday 5th August to raise some funds to help with the Player Injury Fund. A number of players, both men and ladies, have suffered injuries over the past number of months and we are encouraging everyone to come along on the night to contribute to the injury fund.
Congratulations
Congratulations to our club chairman Micky Mackin and his wife Freda who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at the week-end.
Lotto
Last week’s winning lotto numbers were 4, 5, 17 & 26. There were no jackpot winners and 1 x lucky dip winner. The jackpot now stands at £3,700.
Condolences
Everyone at Shane O’Neill’s and Meabh O’Neill’s would like to offer their sympathy to the family of Hugh Lennon who passed away yesterday recently. Mr Lennon was the father- in- law of Meabh O’Neill’s club secretary Debbie Lennon and the grandfather of Ellen, Eabha and Scarlet Lennon who all play for the camogie club. May he rest in peace.
