After a fiercely fought local derby against Correnshigo on Friday evening our senior men returned to winning ways with a five point victory, 1 - 14 to 0 - 12.
Paul O’Rourke opened the scoring early for the Shanes with a well taken point before Correnshigo replied with their first point and quickly followed it up with a close range free. A Ryan Quinn point brought the Shanes level but two points from placed balls put Correnshigo back in front by two before Sean McLoughlin fired over for the Shanes. Another two points on the trot from Correnshigo gave them a three point advantage but a point from Ryan Quinn and two from Paul O’Rourke had the Camlough side back on level terms. A pointed free from Sean McLoughlin edged the Shanes ahead just before the break but a late Correnshigo point saw the teams go in all square at the break at seven points apiece.
Two points in the opening five minutes of the second-half from Mark and Ryan McCabe put the Shanes back in front but Correnshigo responded with two of their own to level the game once more. The game was end to end now and another two points from Mark McCabe kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shanes but once again Correnshigo replied in great fashion and two more points had them level pegging again. A great solo run and point from a tight angle by Ryan McCabe edged his side ahead once more before Ryan Quinn chipped over a great effort to give the Shanes a two point advantage for third time in the second-half. A pointed free from Correnshigo left them just one arrears before Sean McLoughlin fired over his third point of the contest to give the Shanes a two lead heading into the closing minutes. The away side had several chances to tie the game but they failed to make the most of them and the Shanes punished them late on when a clever flick from Conor O’Neill found Mark McCabe, who in turn played in his brother Greg to coolly slide the ball to the back of the Correnshigo net and seal the Shanes win, 1 – 14 to 0 – 12.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies gained four valuable league points over the past week with impressive home wins over Grange and Forkhill on Monday and Wednesday night respectively.
Both matches were similar in that Shanes established a good lead by half time, with outstanding defensive play being the platform for some fast flowing counter attacks, creating countless opportunities, which our on form forward line made the most of.
Both games were highly entertaining with very few fouls or stoppages. Credit not only to our own players, but also those of Grange and Forkhill on providing spectators with lots of honest and skilful play.
U12½s
Having won the shield competition last week in An Ríocht our U12½ footballers travelled to Clonduff on Saturday hoping to return home with more silverware and after playing some more great football they won the shield. The young Shanes were put into group alongside Burren, Clonduff and Clann na Banna. At the conclusion of the group stage the Shanes ended up in a three way with Burren and Clonduff which saw the Shanes progress to the shield final and a game against Roche Emmets. A great performance in the final from all the Shanes youngsters saw them claim another shield title, their second in two weeks. Once again well done to all the Shanes players and their management on another great achievement and also a big word of thanks to all the parents for their continued support and to Clonduff on a very well organised tournament. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday from 6.00pm – 7.00pm at the club.
U10s
Training for the U10s now takes place every Tuesday and Friday at 6.00pm at the club.
U8s
Training for our U8 footballers now takes place every Tuesday and Friday at 6.00pm at the club.
U6s
Training for our U6s continues every Wednesday evening in Bessbrook Community Centre at 6.00pm.
Meabh O’Neills Camogie
The U12 camogs made a great start to the season on Saturday morning with an impressive home win over Killeavy. The girls played some great camogie and were deserving winners.
Training for all camogie, U14, U12, U10 & U8, takes place at the Shanes pitch every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm. All new members, age 4 and upwards, are welcome to attend.
Any past or present camogie or hurling players who could spare one hour per week on a Wednesday evening to help coach some of our underage camogs is asked to contact Sandra Smith on 07599640444. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
The camogie club is organising a car boot sale on 12th June from 11.00am – 3.00pm in Shane O’Neill’s club grounds and every second Sunday from then on.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Armagh Minors following their win over Cavan in the Ulster Championship on Sunday, especially our own Matthew Girvan and Eamon McCabe who both got game time and Damian O’Hagan, currently on loan from Lisummon, who was part of the squad. Congratulations also to our ladies footballer Aimee Mackin who was this week named in the LGFA Division 1 Team of the League for 2016.

Condolences
The club would like to offer their sympathy to the family of Sean Havern who died at the weekend. Sean was grandfather to our underage footballers Sean, Mark and Sophia Havern. May he rest in peace.
