Our senior ladies were crowned Ulster intermediate champions on Sunday following an extremely hard fought over Fermanagh champions Kinawley, on a score-line of 8:7 to 6:9, in front of a huge crowd in Wolfe Tones, Derrymacash.
The Shanes got off to a terrible start and with less than ten minutes on the clock they found themselves 2 - 2 to 0 - 0 down and struggling to find their rhythm. However an Aoibheann Jones point got them off the mark and the same player was on target minutes later with her side’s first goal to half the early deficit.
An Aimee Mackin free had the Shanes back to within three before Blaithin Mackin weaved her way through the Kinawley defence and placed the ball in the bottom corner to bring the sides level. Kinawley edged in front minutes later with their third point only for Aoife McCoy to reply almost immediately for the Shanes before an Aimee Mackin point put her side in front for the first time in the game. Kinawley were back on level terms minutes later but the impressive Aoibheann Jones restored the Shanes lead soon after when she found herself in space in front of the Kinawley goal and she made no mistake, planting the ball in the net and giving her side a three point advantage. Kinawley were almost level again in their next attack but Katie Daly made a great save in the Shanes goal to flick the goal bound effort over the bar to leave just two between them. Great work from Aoibheann Jones found Aimee Mackin within striking distance of the Kinawley goal and she dispatched the ball to net for her side’s fourth goal of the half and Aoife McCoy rounded off the first-half with a well taken point and give the Shanes a six point advantage at the break, 4:5 to 2:5.
The sides swapped points in the opening exchanges of the second-half with Blaithin Mackin on target for the Shanes. The Shanes then opened up nine point lead when Aoibheann Jones notched up her hat-trick but Kinawley replied almost immediately with their third goal of the game to get themselves back to within six. The Shanes lead was almost reduced to just three soon after but Katie Daly made another great brilliant save to keep Kinawley at bay and the Shanes took full advantage when player of the match Shauna Grey scored a great individual goal and give her side a nine point advantage once more. Kinawley reduced the deficit to eight with a well taken point but Kirsty Murphy pointed for the Shanes minutes later to keep her side well in front but Kinawley were by no means out of the game and two goals in as many minutes from the Fermanagh side had them back to within three points. The game was right back in the melting point at this stage but Aimee Mackin eased the Shanes nerves when her low shot found the Kinawley net and the Shanes were six points to the good heading into the final ten minutes. Two Kinawley points kept them right in the hunt and just four in arrears before Aimee Mackin pounced on a defensive mistake to score her side’s eighth and final goal of the contest and give her team a seven point advantage. The game was now in injury time but Kinawley didn’t give up and they recorded another late goal but it wasn’t enough as the Shanes held on to claim the Ulster intermediate title by four points, 8:7 to 6:9.
Having dispatched Carndonagh and Truagh in the earlier rounds, the Shanes ladies came up against a very tough opponent in Kinawley on Sunday but if nothing else this side has great heart and spirit running through it and they needed every ounce of it to get over the line on Sunday. Despite falling eight points behind early on the Shanes never panicked, never doubted their ability and now hold the accolade of Ulster champions. All eyes now turn towards an All-Ireland semi-final and the girls will return to training later this week in preparation for this game.

There will be no training for our U10s and U8s this coming week.

Training for U6s continues every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm in Bessbrook Community Centre. All boys and girls at this age group are welcome to attend.
Meabh O’Neill’s Camogie
The prize-giving night for the Meabh O’Neill’s camogie club will take place on Friday, 18th November at 7.30pm.
Shane’s Shoot-Out Darts Classic
The club is hosting a darts classic on Sunday 13th November with a total of £300 prize money on offer. Entry fee £10 per person….registration at 2.00pm with throwing starting at 3.00pm. Everyone welcome.
