Newry 2nds 6-0 Cookstown 4ths

With Newry’s pitch currently under maintenance the seconds hosted Cookstown at Banbridge High School on Saturday. Newry were looking to make up for the recent defeat in the reverse fixture a few weeks prior and they did this with style returning with a 6-0 victory.

From the start Newry dominated proceedings creating chance after chance, and it wasn’t long before they took the lead when captain Simon McCafferty deflected home a David Hogg cross. Just three minutes later it was two with David Hogg rocketing home from a short corner. It was constant pressure from the home side and although space was of a premium against a deep Cookstown defence Jonah Lutton expertly found room and in a crowded circle to slot home another cross from Hogg, 1 goal and two assists in the first half for the Newry striker and another Lutton to add to the goal scorers for Newry down through the years.

The second half continued in the same vain as Newry put away a forth with David Hogg again firing in from a short corner. Scot Blakley was lively on the ball throughout the game and he got his reward when his original attempt was blocked on the line by a Cookstown foot, Blakley stepped up and slotted home the resulting penalty flick to make it five. Simon Moffett was on hand to get Newry’s sixth to complete the scoring in a comprehensive win for the Belfast Road men.

Team: R, Henning, I. Lutton, N. Lutton, J. Lawson, G. McCullough, S. Graham, G. Moffett, S. Blakely, S. MCCafferty, D. Hogg, J. Lutton, J. Whiteside, S. Moffett, M. McCullough

Newry knew it was going to be a tough game against a senior 2 team. Newry won the toss and chose pass back and from the whistle worked hard to drive forward with the ball but Banbridge made it difficult with their quick tackling. It wasn’t long before Banbridge won their first penalty corner which was deflected into the net from a player at the right post putting them one nil up. Newry kept the heads and with some good passing among the mid field and forwards had a couple of chances but Banbridge were quick to retaliate making their way back don the pitch to win another penalty corner ending the first half 2 nil up.

Into the second half Newry continued to face pressure from the Banbridge side but Newry defence worked well to clear the ball from the circle. Sweeper Chrissie McAuley made great hits down the pitch giving Newry a chance to reform. Banbridge worked well getting the ball from their backs to their midfield and it wasn’t long until the ball was smashed into the Newry circle where the ball was deflected into the goal by one of the forwards giving them their third goal. Newry didn’t have too many chances towards the end of the second quarter but kept strong in their defending until Banbridge won another penalty corner which was well deflected by a Bann forward securing them their fourth goal to finish the first half.

The second half started the same as the first with the continued pressure from the Bann side but with great defending from Chrissie McAuley and Abbey Haire and with super saving from goalie Katie McCullough, the scored remained the same until minutes from the end of the third quarter where Bann scored yet again from a penalty corner.

Into the final quarter Bann were determined to win as many more goals as they could until the final whistle but Newry keep fighting and worked the ball well from the backs to the mid field who tried to give forwards Laverne Inns, Jodie Freeman and Emma-Jayne Moffett a chance to hit their circle but Bann were always quick to intercept. They again sent a crash ball into the Newry circle where the ball was deflected towards the goal bouncing off keeper Katie’s pads into the goal, ending the match 6-0 to Banbridge.

It was a tough match for the Newry ladies against a strong Banbridge side but they kept fighting to the very end and made super tackles throughout.

Team: Kathry Baird (captain), Laverne Inns, Rachael Greer, Katie McCullough, Chrissie McAuley, Sarah McNeilly, Abbey Haire, Stephanie Smart, Rebecca Murdock, Emma-Jayne Moffett, Sara Adams, Jodie Freeman.

Newry ladies play Limavady ladies on Saturday 11th December, their last league match of 2021.
