St. Colman’s College Newry was the venue for the Official Launch of ‘The GAA – A People’s History.’ The book, written by Paul Rouse, Mark Duncan and Mike Cronin and commissioned by the GAA, documents a history of the Association from the perspective of the volunteer and prides itself on having unearthed previously undocumented stories of interest and indeed unseen images from the past 125 years.

In attendance were esteemed Gaels Paddy Mc Flynn (Former President of GAA and Down native) and St. Peter’s Warrenpoint Club Trustee, Barney Carr who managed Down to back to back All Ireland Senior Football titles in 1960 and 1961.
It was also great to see former past pupils of Violet Hill, John Rafferty, Paul Mc Grane and Jarlath Burns (Chairman of GAA 125 Committee) in attendance as well as many other dignitaries from the wider GAA community. GAA President Christy Cooney’s address (also in attendance) followed author Mark Duncan’s and commented on St Colman’s long and proud association with the GAA. Mr Cooney alluded to the fact that one of the founder members of the GAA, Michael Cusack, taught in Violet Hill for a spell. He thanked Canon Brown and the College for the use of it’s fine facilities and commented that it was without doubt the most appropriate place for such an event.
