Write a commentFive Gold Medals and a medal total of 30 were brought back from the annual Disability Sports NI Swimming Championships by Newry and Mourne’s Sportability Swimming Club.
The event held in the Bangor Aurora this year provides a springboard for swimmers at a foundation level who are then selected to represent their own grouping at a higher level. It also provides a showcase for young swimmers as to what can be achieved through sport. A particular case in point is Laurence McGivern from Rostrevor. Laurence is now ranked 6th in the world as a Paralympic Swimmer.
Best for Newry and Mourne were Naoise Quinn who had her best Gala ever coming home with four medals., Edel Smyth who also swims for the Ulster Squad came home with three medals one of which were gold, Ryan McGuiness had a strong performance with four medals and would be one of our hopefuls for the Ulster squad as is Bartosz Gosclansti with his three silver medals, Madeline Woods came in with two medals Dearbhla McCann had a superb performance with three medals one of which was gold, as did Jonathan Evans and Katriona Magee. The big surprise of the day was the brilliant Shayne Magee who had his best gala ever coming home with one gold and two silvers.
Brandon Shields got a gold medal a great performance for his first ever Gala. As always Patrick McCabe swam well and got his silver medal. Oliver Lewis who would be one of the clubs youngest and most promising talents came home with a bronze .
