We wish all a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Thank you for your support
Over 200 people took part in the annual Fergal Caraher Memorial run at St Patrick's GFC, Culyhanna. The event included a 10K& 5K Run and 5K Walk.
Newry and Armagh MP Mickey Brady presented the winners with their trophies and medals.
The fun filled family and community event commentates the death of Fergal in 1990 and raises funds for the Southern Area Hospice.

The overall winner of the Run was Eoin Martin whilst Roisin McShane was the female winner. Kevin Turley and Jack Reel were the winners of their respective 5k categories.
Speaking at the presentation and buffet which took place in St Patricks GFC, the Newry and Armagh MP praised all involved with organising the commemorative fund raising event. He also commended the Caraher family and friends for their dignity in remembering the late Fergal in what he described as a fitting and appropriate manner.
Newry 1’s 5 - 0 South Antrim 1’s
Newry started 2020 in fine fashion as they thumped South Antrim 5-0.
Newry put in possibly their best display this season after the Christmas break against a tough, young South Antrim side. The visitors came flying out of the traps and looked really up for the game, however Newry looked dangerous on the counter attack and could have been one up in the first quarter but Neil McKnight was unable to find the back of the net with his attempt. Early in the second quarter however Newry did find the net as Greer won the ball at the edge of the South Antrim circle before playing in Peter McNiece who rocketed home from a tight angle to open his account for the season in style. Both sides cancelled each other out in the remainder of the quarter as Newry went in one up at the halfway mark.

South again came out strong and put Newry under pressure but the home defence with Josh Porter in nets kept them at bay. On another counter attack Newry got their second with Colin McKnight and Keith McWilliams linking well up front before McWilliams slotted home. Newry were now very much on top and within minutes they got their third when they won the ball back on the left wing and a smart one two between Matty Russell and McKnight to round the keeper seen McKnight get his first of the day.
At the start of the fourth quarter South Antrim went for broke piling forward leaving plenty of room for Newry to play in when they won the ball back. McKnight got his brace from a rebound off a short corner to really put the game to bed. With 8 minutes remaining McWilliams got his second to put the icing on the cake when Greer found him over the top and again McKnight linked up well before McWilliams fired home over the keepers shoulder. A great start to the new year for Newry who next travel to play Instonians.
Team: J. Porter, D. England, C. Henning, J. Greer, A. Baird, N. McKnight, J. Taylor, R. Irwin, C. McKnight, K. McWilliams, M. Russell, K. Fletcher, P. McNiece, C. Large, S. Megaw

BOXING DAY TURKEY
Following a one off rest day on the 25th December - the Mountains of Mourne called Rory Mulvaney to toe the line of the annual Turkey Trot.
The shorter course had to be used for safety reasons with an out and back route to the Hares Gap via a flooded Trassey Track and Tollymore forest paths. Rory completed the race with a great top 13th placing.

CASTLEWELLAN CHRISTMAS CRACKER
Saturday 28th December was the annual Newcastle AC Christmas Cracker pairs race.
With a sold out event 700 teams signed up to what has to be Irelands biggest trail race based around the hills, trails and forests of Castlewellan.
Newry AC entered 4.5 teams due to Mulvaney crossing the Newry divide and pairing up with Conor Morgan from NCR, very closely followed by full Newry AC pairing of Andrew Knapton & Aidan Murray. Ronan Mynes and Noel Carr crossed the line in 1hr 15min, Ciara Coffey and Paul White secured a 7th place in the mixed 80-99 combined age category, with Cathal McGreevy and Mark Malone securing a top 10 in the Male 80-99 combined age category.

PARKRUN - CASTLEWELLAN
Mark Malone joined 492 fellow parkrunners at Castlewellan on New Years Day.
Mark even after a Podium place at the Burren on Boxing Day and a great run on the 28th at the Christmas Cracker still had energy to speed round this beautiful course.
Mark flew around to finish in 1st place in an impressive time of 16:48.

Shane O’Neill’s Community Walkway
If you fancy burning off the turkey after Christmas, want to begin the New Year by getting fit or just want to blow away the cobwebs our community walkway is open to everyone and anyone who wishes to avail of the facility.
Michael Johnson once said “Life is often compared to a marathon, but I think it is more like being a sprinter; long stretches of hard work punctuated by brief moments in which we are given the opportunity to perform at our best.”

One Newry AC athlete completed 2019 doing just that, punctuating 2019 with medal winning performances across Britain and Ireland. A fantastic achievement and just reward for Joanne McCauley who under the guidance of Kookie O’Hagan and the addition of sprint coach Brendan Murphy powered to National titles, British & Irish Nation Championship podiums and was also awarded with the opportunity to represent GB&NI at the European Masters Championships in Italy.
On top of filling up the medal cabinet Joanne finished 2019 securing overall British top 10 ranking performances, both indoors and out across multiple events and age categories clocking 8.93 over 60m & 68.82 over 400m indoors. A PB of 67.18 was also secured over 400m at the European Championships.
Joanne’s medal haul included Double Gold in the NI Masters over 100m & 200m, Silver in the long jump and Bronze in the High Jump. The medals didn’t end there with McCauley picking up the All Ireland Irish Nation Long Jump title alongside Silver in the 400m. Not content with being one of the top athletes on the island Joanne also claimed Silver in the British Masters Athletics Championship in Birmingham.
2020 will no doubt continue to deliver national and international success for the Newry AC athlete with winter training in full flow as Joanne prepares to lace up the spikes at the Scottish Open championships in Glasgow at the end of January alongside many club team mates.
