Newry 1’s 1-0 NICS 1’s
Newry hosted Civil Service on Saturday in their first of two consecutive home games in which they would be hoping to pick up a maximum of 6 points. The home side dominated the first half as Service played half court just hoping to keep the Belfast road men out and hit on the counter attack. The chances were few and far between in the early as service set deep cutting down all space for the Newry forwards. As the half wore on Newry began to move the ball quicker moving the service defence around to create more space. This finally paid off when Greer bust forward with the ball from right back beating 3 players before firing in a low cross which Andrews deflected into Colin McKnights path who slotted home past the keeper.
Newry continued to create chances after the opening goal with the best chance falling to Robert Irwin who was unable to beat the advancing keeper after great work on the left hand side of the pitch left him one on one but the keeper pulled of a great save low to his left.
The second half started as the first finished with Newry creating a lot of chances but were wasteful in front of goal, McWilliams, Fletcher and McKnight all had chances to extend the lead but were denied time and again by the Civil Service keeper who was playing out of his skin.
Service began to push forward in search of the equaliser looking to take advantage of Newry’s wastefulness in front of goal. The Belfast Road men seemed to lose control of the game and were unable to hold on to the ball for any period of time which caused a nervy end to the game which should have been out to bed a lot earlier. However Newry seen out the game to come away with all three points.
Team: J. Porter, J. Greer, N. Liggett, D. England, C. Henning, N. McKnight, R.Irwin, C. McKnight, K. McWilliams, D. Andrews, K. Fletcher, A. Megaw, A. Baird
Newry host Campbellians next Saturday at 2pm.
Newry’s first home game of the season took place on October 25th against a relatively unheard of BC Wolves.
Newry’s starting five all found themselves on the scoreboard in the first quarter with some excellent ball movement from player-coach Sean Brady and Newry’s ability to finish at the free throw line as the BC Wolves committed nine fouls in the first quarter, only two short of the fouls the Fliers committed throughout the entire game. It didn’t take the Fliers long to figure out that this would be a physical game. Declan Mathers was a noticeable force on the boards in the first and found himself at the free throw line for his efforts however the BC Wolves had some scoring options themselves as Surginas, No.32 (C) made it clear he was a threat beyond the three point line with the first quarter ending a close 20-21.
The second quarter kicked off and seen a fantastic scoring performance from Paul Crawley (C) throughout the quarter as the Wolves were unable to stop him on the drive. Newry players were at the foul line again as the Wolves had seven fouls in the quarter. Surginas was quickly on the score sheet again for the Wolves and No.99 M.Sekstins; also put away some nice baskets near the end of the quarter to keep his team within a three point deficit with the first half ending 44-41.
The third quarter began with some back to back baskets from both Aaron O’Reilly and Paul Crawley, and some fast attacking basketball from Aaron Miller as he was picking up points from the free throw line, as the Wolves found themselves in foul trouble again. Sadly that was all that Newry could offer in this game changing quarter as they found the Wolves too much to handle with great basketball from Surginas and Sekstins again. No14 Kubeckis had some good shooting in the quarter too and added to their 54-71 lead.
A challenging fourth quarter opened with baskets from BC Wolves No.17 Miklovis and No.9 Jurkynas, Newry’s Ali Gorman had a commanding quarter as he was putting in the work on defence and getting some points in the process. Aaron Miller finished off the game with a strong performance and some back to back points to show for it and Wolves’ Sekstins was doing much of the same. Unfortunately the third quarter seemed to have been too damaging for the Fliers to return from.
The final score was Newry Fliers 68, BC Wolves 89.
Newry’s Paul Crawley picked up two well-earned MVP’s.
BC Wolves Surginas also picked up two deserved MVP’s.
Senior Ladies – Ulster Champions
Our senior ladies were crowned Ulster intermediate champions on Sunday following an extremely hard fought over Fermanagh champions Kinawley, on a score-line of 8:7 to 6:9, in front of a huge crowd in Wolfe Tones, Derrymacash.
The Shanes got off to a terrible start and with less than ten minutes on the clock they found themselves 2 - 2 to 0 - 0 down and struggling to find their rhythm. However an Aoibheann Jones point got them off the mark and the same player was on target minutes later with her side’s first goal to half the early deficit.
An Aimee Mackin free had the Shanes back to within three before Blaithin Mackin weaved her way through the Kinawley defence and placed the ball in the bottom corner to bring the sides level. Kinawley edged in front minutes later with their third point only for Aoife McCoy to reply almost immediately for the Shanes before an Aimee Mackin point put her side in front for the first time in the game. Kinawley were back on level terms minutes later but the impressive Aoibheann Jones restored the Shanes lead soon after when she found herself in space in front of the Kinawley goal and she made no mistake, planting the ball in the net and giving her side a three point advantage. Kinawley were almost level again in their next attack but Katie Daly made a great save in the Shanes goal to flick the goal bound effort over the bar to leave just two between them. Great work from Aoibheann Jones found Aimee Mackin within striking distance of the Kinawley goal and she dispatched the ball to net for her side’s fourth goal of the half and Aoife McCoy rounded off the first-half with a well taken point and give the Shanes a six point advantage at the break, 4:5 to 2:5.
The sides swapped points in the opening exchanges of the second-half with Blaithin Mackin on target for the Shanes. The Shanes then opened up nine point lead when Aoibheann Jones notched up her hat-trick but Kinawley replied almost immediately with their third goal of the game to get themselves back to within six. The Shanes lead was almost reduced to just three soon after but Katie Daly made another great brilliant save to keep Kinawley at bay and the Shanes took full advantage when player of the match Shauna Grey scored a great individual goal and give her side a nine point advantage once more. Kinawley reduced the deficit to eight with a well taken point but Kirsty Murphy pointed for the Shanes minutes later to keep her side well in front but Kinawley were by no means out of the game and two goals in as many minutes from the Fermanagh side had them back to within three points. The game was right back in the melting point at this stage but Aimee Mackin eased the Shanes nerves when her low shot found the Kinawley net and the Shanes were six points to the good heading into the final ten minutes. Two Kinawley points kept them right in the hunt and just four in arrears before Aimee Mackin pounced on a defensive mistake to score her side’s eighth and final goal of the contest and give her team a seven point advantage. The game was now in injury time but Kinawley didn’t give up and they recorded another late goal but it wasn’t enough as the Shanes held on to claim the Ulster intermediate title by four points, 8:7 to 6:9.
Having dispatched Carndonagh and Truagh in the earlier rounds, the Shanes ladies came up against a very tough opponent in Kinawley on Sunday but if nothing else this side has great heart and spirit running through it and they needed every ounce of it to get over the line on Sunday. Despite falling eight points behind early on the Shanes never panicked, never doubted their ability and now hold the accolade of Ulster champions. All eyes now turn towards an All-Ireland semi-final and the girls will return to training later this week in preparation for this game.
Everyone at the club would like to congratulate all the girls and their management team of Peter Lynch and Caoibhe Sloan on their tremendous achievement, one which live long in the memory. Portdown 1’s 3-2 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Portadown hoping to build on their first win of the season against North Down in their previous match. This was going to be difficult as they took to the pitch with a greatly depleted team with players playing out of position to fill gaps.
Portadown flew out of the traps adn took an early lead when they attacked down their left and crossed with the Portadown scorer totally free in the circle to easily slot home. They continued to cause Newry problems at the back with their movement, however as the half moved on the visitors began to grow into the game. Newry got back on equal terms when David Andrews was on hand to slot home from a short corner after the initial shot had been blocked. Newry continued to press and were unlucky not to go in at half time in the lead.
In the second half Newry were forced back as the home side started to apply more pressure, however a mistake at the back and quick thinking from Colin McKnight allowed him to nip in and steal the ball back before cleverly rounding the keeper and firing the ball home. Their lead was short lived however as Portadown came straight back into the game when they scored from a penalty stroke to level the scores.
Portadown were now starting to dominate as they rolled subs on and off with Newry beginning to tire. The home side took the lead when a short corner was deflected in at the back post with 10 minutes left. Newry tried to push forward in search of the equaliser but Portadown were looking the fresher of the two sides and were able to hold on for a 3-2 victory.
Team: J. Porter, C. Henning, N. Liggett, D. England, I. Toombs, N. McKnight, R. Irwin, C. McKnight, A. Baird, A. Megaw, D. Andrews, J.Greer, D. Barlow.
Donaghadee Ladies 4-1 Newry Ladies
Newry ladies travelled to Bangor for their match on Saturday against Donaghadee.
Newry started out well and although they conceded 2 penalty corners in the first few minutes they managed to keep Donaghadee at bay.
However at 15 minutes in and against the run of play the home team managed to score their first goal. The second came at around 20 and the third just before the half time whistle.
Team captain Kathryn Baird managed to rally the troops at half time and Newry went on the attack. This paid off when Shannen Robinson caught the Donaghadee goalkeeper off guard and scored Newry's first.
Donaghadee had another goal disallowed but then managed to get number 4 in the last few minutes.
However the score did not reflect the match with both teams being very equally matched. Final score 4--1 to Donaghadee.
Team: Kathryn Baird capt, Shannen Robinson, Nicola Shields, Stephanie Smart, Rachael Lockhart, Colette Lambe, Victoria Lewis, Suzanne Rollins, Gilly Roney, Lynn Anderson, Lynne Ervine, Jessica Rowland, Laura Girvan.

Banbridge 3’s 3-0 Newry 2’s
Newry Fliers faced an opening day road trip to Omagh Thunder as this years season kicked off.
A tough opponent in the past, this game was to prove similar. Thunder started in the front foot, nailing two 3 pointers. A couple of free throws from Mathers and Gorman remained Newry’s only reply. Things didn't get much better for the Fliers. Points from Aaron Miller and subsequent man of the match Paul Crawley were out done by a powerful inside game delivered fiercely by the Thunder. Newry dusted themselves off and Coach Brady shook things up with the start line up.
Father son duo Gavin and Cillian Cumisky delivered on both ends of the court, their powerful defensive work steadying the ship for Newry and reducing the offence of the home team. The fourth quarter proved to be Newry’s best. Offensively the work of young guns Niall Brady and Aaron O’Reilly reduced the lead of the thunder. On the other end of the court returning veteran Eugene Boyle delivered heavily on rebounds, keeping Omagh at bay. Newry Captain Paul Crawley saw out the fourth quarter with eight unanswered points of his own but it was in vain as Omagh saw out their lead for the win.
Final Score: Newry Fliers 45 Omagh Thunder 79

The Shanes went in front early on thanks to points from Mark McCabe and Ryan Quinn before McCabe set up Matthew Girvan for the opening goal of the contest. The sides then swapped two points each with Mark McCabe on target both times for the Shanes and the same player added a further two frees before the half-time break to see his side leading by seven at the break, 1 – 6 to 0 – 2.
The Shanes all but finished the game off in the opening ten minutes of the second-half, tagging on a further six points in row to leave them thirteen points to the good with the scores coming from Mark McCabe (0 – 4), Ryan Quinn (0 – 1) and Matthew Girvan (0 – 1). Sarsfields then scored their first point of the second-half only for Ryan Quinn and Damian O’Hagan fire over great points for the Shanes before Mark McCabe hit a quick-fire goal and a point to increase the Shanes advantage. To their credit Sarsfields kept plugging away and they were rewarded with a goal and a point of their own but the Shanes finished the game the much stronger side and scored a further 1 – 3 to claim a well-deserved win, the scores coming from Mark McCabe (1 – 0), Matthew Girvan (0 – 2) and Michael McParland (0 – 1).

Newry 2s 6-2 Portrush 2s
Newry played host to Portrush in the first league game of the season. From the beginning Newry were the much stronger side with a number of attacks on the Portrush goal. With Portrush being weak on the right hand side it allowed Gareth Alderdice to press hard from the right back position to play a number of balls into the box. Dale Pollock made the most of one of these and rattled home his first of three goals. Newry continued to push hard after the restart and after a brilliant ball from Moffett to Pollock, whos shot from a tight angle beat the young Portrush keeper on the near post. 2-0 Newry. Portrush pushed back at Newry but stand in keeper Ashley Collum pulled off a fantastic save on the line to keep Portrush at bay, however some poor defending allowed Portrush to pull a goal back before the break. Score at half time 2-1. In the second half Newry continued to dominate with Pollock searching for his hatrick. He came close with a one on one chance with the keeper only to see his shot roll past the wrong side of the post. Eventually though his goal would come to make the score 3-1. Portrush themselves went on the attack winning a short corner that was saved on the line with Kenny Best's foot and a penalty stroke awarded, keeper Collum came agonisingly close to saving the shot but couldn't. Score now 3-2. Game on. Portrush however started to tire and Newry quickly responded with a short corner, the Portrush keeper making the initial save which dropped to Captain Andrew Marks for a simple tap in. With the score 4-2 Newry had complete control with another 2 goals coming from McCafferty and Mcminn making the score 6-2. Newry were unable to further that lead before the final whistle. Score finished 6-2 in Newrys favour.

North Down 1’s 0-4 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Comber on Saturday to take on North Down in a must win game. Newry had come agonisingly close to getting an unlikely point against Cookstown last week, they needed to build on this performance to get their season up and running.
Right from the start Newry were quicker to the ball all over the pitch as they started the brighter of the two sides. They needed to make their early dominance count and they duly did when Keith McWilliams was able to get on the end of a cross which he controlled and slipped through the keepers legs. Newry continued to remain on top but were wasting chances which nearly came back to haunt them only for young keeper Josh Porter to pull off a great save from a short corner to keep the visitors in the lead. Newry very nearly doubled their lead soon after when Kris Fletcher fired in a low cross which Jeremy Greer stretched to deflect it goal wards only to see it come off the inside of the post. It wasn’t long before Newry did get their second which came from a broken down short corner which Robert Irwin managed to scramble over the line. Newry further extended their lead on the stroke of half time when David England found McWilliams free in the circle who cleverly deflected the pass over the advancing keeper.
North Down started the better of the sides in the second half as they pressed the Newry defence in their search of a goal to get them back in the game. The Downshire Road men managed to weather this early storm and again started to dominate the play. They were now starting to break down the play and win the ball back inside the North Down half as they went in search of their forth. McWilliams finished off his hat trick when again Newry won the ball back deep in the North Down half by Irwin who played the ball forward to McWilliams who fired in a low miss hit reverse which beat the keepers outstretched foot. With the score 4-0 the match was effectively over as Newry continued to create opportunities and win short corners but they were wasteful in front of goal. Newry came home with their first three points of the season which seats them up well for next week’s match away to Portadown.

Ballynahinch Ladies 4-0 Newry Ladies
Newry ladies 1st Xl travelled to Ballynahinch for what is always known to be a tough defensive match and it proved to be just that.
In the first half Newry defended a series of penalty corners, the second of which saw a goal scored for the home side 10 minutes into the game.
Their second goal came 25 minutes in which prompted a change in defence formation going into the second half. Despite this and even with some excellent saves from newry goalkeeper Gillian Roney Ballynahinch scored another 2 goals in the second half.
Newry had 2 chances to score late on in the game but failed due to the skills of the Ballynahinch keeper.
An aggressive match was had by both teams which resulted in a number of green cards issued by both umpires against each team. Final score 4-0 to the home team.
Team: Avril Harpur (capt) Gillian Roney, Rebecca Murdock, Stephanie Smart, Lynne Ervine, Rachael Lockhart, Amy Wilson, Shannen Robinson, Suzanne Rollins, Kathryn Baird and Laura Girvan.
Newry 1s 1-2 Cookstown 1’s
Newry hosted Cookstown on Saturday, back in the Ulster Premier after being relegated from the Irish Hockey League. The hosts lined up with a thread bare team due to a lengthy injury list. The visitors would have been expecting to go away with an easy three points, however they got what will probably be one of their tougher tests of the season.
The game started off with both sides testing each out without really causing much in the way of work for either keeper. It wasn’t long though before the visitors proved how ruthless they can be in front of goal as they rattled home a low drag flick from their first short corner. Newry had chances of their own to get back in the game with both Keith McWilliams and David Andrews both being denied by the Cookstown keeper. The Newry defence were keeping Cookstown at bay but the visitors would still show glimpses of their quality being denied by the post to extend their lead just before the break.
The second half saw a real end to end game as both teams went all out for the second goal of the match. Luckily the goal fell the way of Newry as veteran Andrews picked the ball up on the left wing before driving into the circle to find Kris Fletcher who scored at the second attempt, his first goal since his return to Newry.
Newry could not hold out for long as Cookstown again scored with a short corner just a matter of minutes after the home side got on level terms. Newry really pushed for the equaliser, but could not find the quality in front of goal of their opponents. Newry forced a number of short corners as they began to dominate the end of the game. David England was unlucky with his attempt as a low drag flick smashed off the upright, McWilliams was also denied by the Cookstown keeper. With the final whistle ready to go Newry won a short corner, England forcing a smart save from the keeper before Neil Liggett picked up the rebound to force another corner. The second corner fizzled out as Newry fell to a 2-1 defeat, Cookstowns celebrations at the end showed how close Newry came to getting a surprising point.

Banbridge 4’s 2-5 Newry 2’s
After an extremely wet Saturday morning the match at HaveLock was giving the green light, both teams started brightly, with chances at both ends.
It was the away team that broke the deadlock with a great through ball from midfield to Dale Pollock who took the ball in his stride before unleashing a rocket into the top left corner leaving the keeper as a spectator.
Bann hit back with a penalty stroke, even with the best efforts of the stand in keeper Eddie Graham the ball was dispatched low to his right to level the score.
A quick breakaway from Bann caught the Newry defence out of position and after Graham cleared the first attempt unfortunately it went straight to a Bann player who's quick pass sent his team mate 1 on 1 and he made no mistake at the second time of asking. At 2-1 down and the home side looking like they had just hit their stride, it wasn't looking good for Newry. Newry had a chance to get back on level terms when Simon McCafferty stepped up to take a penalty stroke after Pollock had been fouled when straight through on goal, however his weak effort was easily saved by the Bann keeper.
Newry did get back on level terms soon after though with Veteran Mervyn McCaigue on hand at the back post for a tap in when the ball was not cleared by the home side.
This was the turning point in the game and Newry were on the front foot after this,
They managed to edge ahead before half time with a great move which started at the half way line where Andy Marks fired a ball forward to McCafferty who found Alan McMinn in the circle who finished first time.
In the second half it was all Newry as the pushed forward trying to put the game to bed.
A well worked move from a hit out seen Paul English find Richy Mcminn in midfield and after shaking off two challenges he slipped the ball to Philly Moffet who found Dale tightly marked but after shrugging off his marker and creating some space, managed to fashion out a reverse stick shot which looped over the advancing keeper.
After that Bann did show some attacking threat and won several short corners
Which Newry defended well and new keeper Ashley Collum pulling off a save low to his left to keep the home side out.
Paul English moved forward from defence as Newry were awarded their second stroke of the day as English was fouled by the keeper when clean through. He stepped up himself and slotted home sending the keeper the wrong way. Newry were now 5-2 up and played the rest of the game out in comfort with young Gareth Alerdice standing out with a great composed performance.
