It's true no one can touch the mighty Kerry in Division One of the Allianz Football League, but despite emerging on the losing side Armagh can take away many positives from today's Allianz League game at the Athletic Grounds. Despite being down six points at one stage Kieran McGeeney's side never gave up and at no stage did it look like the game was out of reach for the orchard side to rob.

A massive crowd was in attendance in beautiful Spring sunshine necessitating a ten minute delay before the game started.

The first half saw quite a few possible scores wasted on both sides but Kerry forged ahead and it was 0:4 to 0:8 for Kerry at half time.

A goal from Kerry's David Clifford eight minutes into the second half suddenly put them ahead by 6 points but two converted frees from Rian O'Neill kept Armagh in the game.
In the final 15 minutes the home side just couldn't get past the three point lead with Kerry keeping the pressure on.
Rian O’Neill was top scorer for Armagh on the day with 5 points, 4 converted from frees. Next weekend sees an away game to Donegal and while Armagh can technically still make the Division One League Final it's not straightforward.
Final Score Armagh 0:13 Kerry 1:13
GAA FOR ALL Take Over Stormont

A massive thank you to Justin Mc Nulty for his wonderful invitation to our GAA for All players, coaches and their parents to Stormont today.
Departing Warrenpoint at midday the group were greeted at the front steps by Justin at Stormont in the warm spring afternoon. The group really enjoyed the tour of the assembly where the important decision was made to let’s get playing GAA on the front lawn.
Club Children's Officer, Anne McCormack, spoke confidently within the Assembly on behalf of our club.
After the inclusive warm-up, the team played a tough game thankful for the support that our parents provided. An important part of all GAA matches is the post-game refreshments and Stormont did not disappoint here - everyone enjoyed the sandwiches.
The club presented Justin with a Warrenpoint GAA kit for his son Setanta. Many thanks to Paul McKibben for presenting each of the players with a memento of their day. Thank you to everyone who made today such a great success and to The club for their constant support for GAA for All.

Challenge game U14 V Bosco
A massive thank you to all the girls for their gallant efforts against Bosco in St Colman’s this morning. As we continue to prepare for the start of the season (10th April) we appreciate every opportunity to play as a team. We will be better for the experience against a very strong Bosco team. With the sun shining, the girls were outstanding and fought hard to the final whistle. Unfortunately, the score board didn’t reflect the tenacity and work ethic which was on display on the pitch. Excellent work rate girls and thank you to Bosco for the game. We’ll see you Tuesday 7pm @ St Marks. Let’s keep the numbers and enthusiasm up.
Congratulations Dermot

Newry 1's 2-1 North Down

After a week break Newry were back in action on Friday night against North Down. The home side had a number of notable absentees, however the players stepping up to fill the spaces were more than up to the challenge. North Down controlled the ball for long periods but without much penetration or clear cut chances being created. It was Newry who looked more dangerous on the counter and went one up when a short corner was stopped illegally on the line and Peter McKnight stepped up to fire home the penalty stroke. The visitors did force a few short corners before the half time break but did not trouble Richard McGivern in nets.
The second half ebbed and flowed, Newry trying to further their lead and North trying to get back on level terms. Both Andrew Shekleton and Peter McKnight missed chances to put Newry two up before North narrowly missed a golden opportunity to get the match back to one all. Another counter attack lead to a short corner and Peter McKnight got his second of the game with a drag flick. Newry started to manage the game now in order to see out the remaining time. North did not create many chances before the very last hit of the game when they scored from a short corner to leave the score 2-1 at full time.
Team: R. McGivern, C. Henning, J. Taylor, A. Baird, G. Moffett, J. Greer, P. McKnight, K. Fletcher, N. Davenport, K. McWilliams, A. Shekleton, C. Large, N. McKnight, D. Barlow, J. Porter
Newry Ladies 2-1 Parkview Ladies
Newry ladies finished the season with a fantastic 2-1 win against Parkview on Saturday 19th March. A super performance from start to finish and were the deserving winners.
From the whistle, Newry dominated the first half with great composure among the whole team. Midfield dynamos Steph, Rachael and Kathryn kept feeding the forwards with decisive attacking passes, leading to many chances but were unable to finish.
Going into the third quarter, Newry were determined to score and kept the pace up showing real determination for each and every ball. This played off when the ball was played from right mid Kathryn down the line to right winger Brianna who played a crash ball into the circle where left winger Laverne picks up the ball and puts it in the back of the net. Newry kept the pressure on and it wasn’t long before a penalty corner was awarded where the ball was slipped to Chrissie at the top of the circle who with a shot on goal put Newry 2 nil up.
With only 5 minutes to the final whistle, Parkview broke and by slipping the ball across keeper Katie, the ball was deflected into the net concluding the match 2-1 to Newry.
A very well-deserved win for the Newry ladies who have put so much commitment and determination into both training sessions and matches throughout the season which clearly proved valuable in the final game.
Team: K Baird (captain), L Inns, R Greer, K McCullough, C McAuley, R Clarke, S McNeilly, A Haire, S Smart, R Murdock, Z Moffett, L Murdock, Emma-Jayne Moffett, J Freeman, M Gregg
Newry 2’s 5-0 South Antrim 3’s
In the first match of the league cup Newry ran out emphatic 5-0 winners versus South Antrim on Saturday afternoon. It was a controlled professional performance from Newry as they dominated from the start to the end of the game. Corey Large got his first of the day when he was the quickest to react to a scuffed shot in the first quarter. He then turned provider five minutes later to put one on a plate for Simon McCafferty. Newry could have added to their account but went in at half time two goals to the good.
The second half started off with a bang when Jonah Lutton smartly flicked over the keeper with only 30 seconds played to put the game to bed. As the match wore on Newry carved out chance after chance, both McCafferty and Large added to their first half goals to give the home side an unassailable 5-0 win and set their sights on next weeks trip to Bangor in the cup.
Team: R. Henning, J. Gregg, A. Baird, J. Lawson, N. Lutton, J. Lutton, S. McCafferty, S. Moffett, G. Moffett, S. Blakely, J. Whiteside, M. McCullough, D. Barlow, J. Porter, J. Greer, C. Large
Warrenpoint Town FC will have no fear of being taken out with the trash when their Linfield FC clash is broadcast on Sky Sports – even though the match is next door to a recycling centre.
The high profile Irish Danske Bank Premiership match on Saturday will see the bottom of table team fight for survival against the league leaders, with the Blues looking to push away from rivals Cliftonville.
Sky Sports are now able to broadcast the 12.30pm football match safely after a late application for early closure of Warrenpoint recycling centre – which is next door to Warrenpoint Town’s ground – was approved at the council’s neighbourhood services committee on Wednesday night.
The closure of the waste facility will allow for a section of road at the club’s Upper Dromore Road base to be closed. The shared entrance’s closure means Sky Sports TV can operate a live broadcast while avoiding any health and safety risk for participants as well as people using the facility.
The recycling centre will be closed from 11am on Saturday March 26, with sign posts along the route advising members of the public.
Warrenpoint are rooted to the bottom of the table, some 12 points off Portadown in 11th who occupy the relegation play-off position.
Warrenpoint manager, Barry Gray, speaking to the media (Tuesday March 22) following a 5-2 beating against Coleraine, said he was dreading the match against the Blues.
“I’m absolutely dreading it, to be honest with you,” said Gray.
“We’re playing the best team in the country, top of the table against the bottom, and there is a gulf of difference between the two teams. Man for man, squad for squad,” he added.
Due to the late receipt of the request, the implementation of the recommendation will go before full council some nine days after the match on April 4.
U14 Ladies
Cumann Pheadair Naofa v Shamrocks – Saturday 26th March, challenge match

The under 14 ladies had a great run out in Moygannon yesterday morning against Newry Shamrocks. Our 4th pre-season friendly produced our most cohesive display so far and should go a long way towards preparing for us for the league starting on April 10th. The girls put in a real effort against a Shamrocks side who got the better of us twice last season and will no doubt trouble everyone in their division this year. Best of luck to them and thanks for the game today. Our teamwork is building nicely and showing encouraging work rate. Best wishes to Teagan Carvill and Laura Healy who picked up injuries in the match and to Anne Connell who got injured in the match against Clonduff.
U9 Hurlers
On Saturday 26th April Cumann Pheadaír Naofa U9 hurlers made the short trip to Dundalk for the final Pre season blitz before the outdoor season starts in a few weeks time.
Unfortunately the blitz was cancelled at short notice with Cumann Pheadaír Naofa already at the venue. Not to be deterred by this ‘minor’ hiccup the management and parents decided to make the most of the unseasonably warm weather and a quick dash to Templetown beach was hastily organised.
Great craic was had by the parents and children who made the journey to the beach. Hurls were used as shovels, sandcastles were made, holes were dug and a game of hurling broke out in the midst of everything happening.
Thanks to the parents and management for making a great day truly memorable after the disappointment of the blitz being cancelled.

U19’s Lift B league Trophy in High Scoring Match
The U19 footballers lifted the B title on a sunny Sunday in St John’s where they ran out convincing winners in the end against a very strong Loughinisland team; 3:15 to 4:10 where there were goals galore!

Luke Kelly pulled off an amazing penalty save and without a doubt the score of the match came from Harry Lynch who netted a goal with a volley mid air, the likes of it the crowd had never seen before! The man of the match performance came from the skilful, hardworking Rory Powell who pointed some fantastic scores. This team, under the new management of Christy, Darren, Paul and Conor certainly are one to look out for.

Cumann Pheadair Naofa v Saul – Saturday 2nd April, league match

U18 Ladies
Date: 31st March – 7:00pm
Teams: Cumann Pheadair Naofa vs Rostrevor
Match Summary: The U18 ladies in blue, faced close neighbours Rostrevor at Milltown, in their opening league encounter, on a rathe chilly Thursday evening. The visitors were quickly into their stride & rattled in a couple of goals early in the first half. Warrenpoint were a little slower to get going, but once they did, they displayed some excellent fluid play, with direct running & some slick passing. The points started to come regularly for Warrenpoint, with Rostrevor limited to the occasional counterattack. The rest of the first half followed in this vein, with the home side heading into half-time with a comfortable lead.
The Rostrevor coaches did their work well at the half-time break, as the visitors ramped up the pressure & started chipping away at the deficit. Most of the play was in the Warrenpoint half of the field, as the gap between the two teams gradually reduced. The blues managed to relieve some of the pressure by taking regular points, but were still outscored by Rostrevor, during this period of play. With nerves frayed, as the point deficit was reduced to two, the referee’s whistle finally came to the rescue of Warrenpoint, the blues holding on for the victory.
It was an excellent game, played in good spirits. Kudos to both sets of players, for the skills that were on display & the effort & determination that went into producing a fine example of ladies’ Gaelic football.
Well done ladies!
Final score: Cumann Pheadair Naofa 2-14 (20) Rostrevor 4-6 (18)

Age Group: U18 Ladies
Teams: Mayobridge v Cumann Pheadair Naofa.
Warrenpoint’s U18 ladies travelled to Mayobridge for their second league match of the campaign on the evening of April 6. With a strong wind blowing straight down the field, the match was a stereotypical “game of two halves”. The home team had the wind at their backs in the first half and made good use of it, heading into half-time with a 5-point advantage. With the turnaround for the second half, it was the visitors’ turn to make the wind count. Fine defensive work from the Blues’ back lines limited scoring opportunities for Mayobridge, whilst the forward lines overhauled the score deficit & more, ensuring that the visitors went home the happier of the two teams, having taken a hard-fought win.
Well done to both sets of players, who had to work hard in challenging conditions.
Best wishes to Ella from Mayobridge, who sustained an injury in the second half & had to leave the field of play.
Final score: Mayobridge 3-7 (16) Cumann Pheadair Naofa 4-11 (23)

U14 Ladies
Cumann Pheadair Naofa v Dundrum – Sunday 10th April, league match
The Warrenpoint u14 ladies got off to a winning start with their first league fixture, away to Dundrum, today. With blustery conditions the Blues played against the wind with an impressive 1 goal and 4 points from Katie Poland bringing us up to half time 1-4 apiece. The second half began brightly with Katie Quinn adding a goal and 2 points to keep us in front, before Dundrum hit a purple patch and took some good scores of their own to keep the contest tight. Further scores from Katie McGivern (1-0), Lilly Sloan (1-2) and Rachel craven (0-1) sealed a 4-09 to 3-70 victory. Stellar work by Hollie Rice in goal and Teagan Carvill in midfield plus some tenacious defending across the entire pitch helped keep a very competitive Dundrum team at bay until the final whistle. Thanks to all at Dundrum for a great game.
Congratulations Kieran
Congratulations to club hurling referee Kieran Rice who was the man in charge of the Leinster Minor Hurling Championship game between Antrim and Meath.
