Newry 1’s 4-5 Kilkeel 1’s
Newry’s final game before the Christmas break was against Kilkeel on Saturday in a thrilling narrow 5-4 loss.
Newry started well and took an early lead with 7 minutes gone when Keith McWilliams was on hand to slot home after a mazy run from Peter McKnight. They hold onto this lead until the second quarter when Kilkeel caught the defence napping and reacted first to the rebound off McGivern in nets. They made it two one with a short corner soon after to take a slender lead in at the break.
The visitors scored very early in the second half from a dubious short corner to give themselves a two goal cushion. However Newry were still fighting to get back into the game and Corey Large popped up at the back post for his first goal of the season. Kilkeel stepped up a gear forcing a number of short corners and they managed to convert two of them to have a commanding 5-2 lead with 8 minutes remaining. Newry still continued to battle and provider turn scorer as Peter McKnight arrived just in front of the keeper to poke the ball home to make it 5-3. Newry forced a late short corner which Ivan Steen fired home from the top of the circle but it was too little too little for the homeside.

Newry 2nds 3-1 North Down
North Down visited Newry on Saturday and started very brightly carving out a number of early chances but the Newry defence held strong to the early attacks. Newry’s first real chance came from captain Simon McCafferty who’s snap shot was brilliantly saved by the North Down keeper. As always, when the ball falls to David Hogg in the circle the keeper will be worked but this time from a tight angle Hogg rocketed the ball home to give Newry the lead. This seemed to give Newry the confidence to push forward and Gareth Moffett from right back found himself in on goal after a great run and slotted home Newry’s second of the game.
The second half ebbed and flowed, with Newry having the best of the chances, Simon Moffett was able to convert his chance to make it three. However Richard Henning in the Newry goals was called into action a number of times late on, with North Down getting a late consolation goal to make the final score 3-1.
Team: R. Henning, J. Whiteside, N. Lutton, J. Lutton, G. MCCullough, S. Moffett, D. Barlow, S. Blakely, I. Lutton, A. Marks, G. Moffett, M. McCullough, D. Hogg, S. McCafferty

Newry started the new year as they finished the last with a well deserved win away from home. With only three games remaining Newry are sitting in second position in the league and still need to host league leaders, Queens, in the coming weeks.
Lisnagarvey started the game with their usual fluid passing but were unable to break Newry down, the visitors were getting joy with their more direct approach and it didn’t take long before captain Simon McCafferty put Newry ahead. Newry created plenty of chances in the first half with Noah Lutton and Josh Porter both having great opportunities but were unable to convert.
As the match wore on Newry began to dominate more and again create chances, however the ‘Garvey goal keeper was in fine form keeping out attempts from Corey Large, Gareth Moffett and Steven Graham. Newry 2’s 2-0 Queens 2’s

Newry 2XI continued their unbeaten start to 2022 with a clinical 2-0 victory at home to top of the table Queens
The game started off with end to end hockey neither side were able to make inroads of any note in the first quarter. In the 2nd quarter Queens did start to apply more pressure and forced a number of short corners, however they found Richie Henning in the Olympic goal in top form as he was equal to anything fired at him.
The third quarter was all Newry Gareth Moffett made a great run and cut the ball back to Simon McCafferty who showed quick hands and a clever finish to give Newry a well-deserved lead This seemed to give Newry the confidence to push forward and it was not long to they doubled their lead when Josh Porter finished off a well worked short corner giving the keeper no chance.
As the match wore on Newry began to dominate more and again created chances, however the Queens goal keeper was in fine form keeping out attempts from McCafferty, Porter and Moffett

Newry deservedly held out to take all 3 points

Newry Ladies 1-4 Donaghadee Ladies
Newry ladies played their first match of 2022 on Friday 14thJanuary at home against Donaghadee ladies. Donaghadee won pushback and was quick to drive the ball forward but Newrywere straight in to intercept. Newry played the ball well among the midfield and forwards, keeping Donaghadee’sdefence under pressure. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before Donagahdee broke and drove the ball into the Newry circle where their left winger put them 1 nil up. Newry kept the heads and worked well as a team creating some lovely passes and tackles and were determined to equalise but were soon faced with their first penalty corner of the match which was well cleared by second runner Rachael Greer. Donaghadeecontinued to put the pressure on and they managed to securetheir second goal of the match when their centre forward striked the ball from the top of the circle into the net. Not long to go before the end of the first quarter, Newry won a penalty corner which was injected out by Kathryn Baird to Jodie Freeman who slipped the ball to Chrissie McAuley on the left who put the ball into the bottom left of the net, ending the first quarter 2-1 down.
Newry came out strong in the second quarter and with fantastic defending by Rebecca Murdock, Abbey Haire and Lisa Murdock, Donaghadee had little opportunities to score any more goals. At half time the score remained 2-1 to Donaghadee.
Not long into the third quarter, Donaghadee’s centre forward broke and Newry’s keeper Katie McCullough was faced one on one but was unable to save what was a brilliant goal by the forward.
Despide being 3-1 down, Newry continued to play some great hockey and never gave up. Newry were unfortunate to end the match 4-1 down as Donaghadee’s centre forward scored their last goal of the game half way into the final quarter. Right up to the final whistle, Newry continued to show energy and determination in which was a superb performance by the ladies.

Newry 1’s 2-3 Cookstown 1’s
Newry’s first game of the new year was not going to be an easy one as they hosted league leaders Cookstown on Saturday. The home side gave a good account of themselves as they narrowly lost 3-2.
It was the underdogs who started the brighter of the two teams forcing two early corners but could not convert. Newry were happy to sit back and soak up pressure for periods before hitting on the counter and it was one of these counter attacks that provided the break through with Peter McKnight finding Kris Fletcher who fired home high over the keeper.
Cookstown started to apply more pressure and a smartly taking reverse stick shot from the top of the circle provided them with the equaliser in the second quarter.
Early in the second half Cookstown got their second with another early shot from the top of the circle. Newry were still in the game and forced more short corners narrowly missing to get the scores back level. Very early in the forth quarter Cookstown got their third when they scrambled home a short corner of their own. However Newry still fought back and Ivan Steen got the second. Time was running out and Newry were unable to find the equaliser in the close hard fought game.
Team: R. Henning, C. Henning, C. Holmes, A. Baird, J. Greer, I. Steen, N. Davenport, C. McKnight, K. Fletcher, K. McWilliams, P. McKnight, A. Shekleton, J. Gregg, M. McCullough, J. Porter, D. Liggett
North Down 1’s 1-2 Newry 1’s

Newry travelled to Comber to face North Down on Saturday in their rearranged fixture. North Down started brightly with plenty of possession without creating many opportunities. Newry started to grow into the game and were beginning to hit on the counter with Josh Porter coming close but the keeper came out well to narrow his angle and save. Richard McGivern in the Newry goals made a few tidy saves from short corners as the sides went in at half time all square.
With only two minutes played in the second half Newry got their noses in front when Jeremy Greer found Peter McKnight at the edge of the circle who fired home a rocket into the top right hand corner. It was soon two, Colin Henning played a long ball into the channel for Keith McWilliams to latch on to, he drove to the circle and won a short corner. Colin Holmes stepped up and placed the ball into the exact same spot as McKnight only minutes earlier.
North Down were coming on strong and managed to get one back through a short corner with 10 minutes remaining, they then took of their keeper to give an extra outfield player in their attempt to push for the equaliser. Newry managed to hold on and come away with all 3 points.
Team: R. McGivern, C. Holmes, C. Henning, A. Baird, J. Greer, I. Steen, C. McKnight, K. Fletcher, K. McWilliams, P. McKnight, N. Davenport, M. Russell, J. Porter, C. Large, A. Shekleton
Newry 2’s 2-2 South Antrim 3’s
Newry entertained South Antrim on Saturday knowing only a victory would keep their promotion chances alive
Newry started strongly probing the South Antrim defence and causing them difficulties getting the ball out from the back with Newry’s forwards McCafferty, McCullough and Simon Moffett intercepting several balls and were able to mount attacks with strong runs from Blakley and Moffett backing them up in midfield Newry opened the scoring through Gareth Moffett who was quickest to react to a second phase penalty corner and slotted past the keeper
South grew into the game and equalised in the second quarter with a good finish from the middle of the circle after a lapse in concentration from the Newry defence. Both teams exchanged short corners but neither could find another goal as the half drew to an end.
It was south Antrim who took the lead when more slack defending lead to a penalty corner which was dispatched over keeper Richard Henning, again this spurred Newry on as they knew only a victory would keep their promotion chances alive and they were rewarded when Simon McCafferty equalised after being played in by Gareth Moffett.
In the final quarter both teams fired everything at it, with the game going from end to end. South Antrim probably had the better chances but Newry’s defence and keeper stood strong to make sure the scores stayed level it was a keenly fought and entertaining game and a draw was probably a fair result.

Newry Ladies 0-2 Instonians Ladies
On Friday 21 January Newry ladies played Instonian’s at home which they knew wasn’t going to be an easy one. Instonian’s won the toss and chose passback. Inst started strong and were quick to try and drive forward into the Newry circle but were intercepted by mid fielder Rachael Greer who worked well to clear the ball out of the Newry half. The pressure was constantly on by the Inst side but with great tackling and composure by the Newry defense, Inst were unable to score in the first half. Newry were delighted to remain nil nil by the second half and were determined to keep the momentum going into the second half. Unfortunalty, early into the second half Inst played the ball across the Newry goal where their left winger deflected the ball into the net.
Newry continued to fight back and played some great hockey creating a few opportunities but were unable to equalise. Inst soon won a penalty corner and went 2 nil up which was questioned by the Newry side as the ball hit an Inst foot on the way in. The goal was given, which put even more pressure on the Newry girls as with only one quarter to go they knew they would have to fight to the end to keep Inst from scoring anymore.
A proud team performance by the Newry ladies to end the match 2-0 down against such a strong side. Super play by keeper Katie McCullough who made some fantastic saves throughout the game.
Team: Elle Corkey, Laverne Inns, Katie McCullough, Chrissie McAuley, Jenna Belshaw, Rose Clarke Stephanie Smart, Rebecca Murdock, Emma-Jayne Moffett, Lisa Murdock, Jodie Freeman, Rachael Greer, Laverne Inns

Armagh passed a demanding test with flying colours on Saturday when they beat Dublin at Croke Park and, after the three other games all ended in draws, Kieran McGeeney’s men sit top of the Division One table after the first round of fixtures.
Dublin took an early lead on their home turf but Armagh led 4-3 when Rian O’Neill collected a superb long pass from Aidan Nugent and cracked a superb finish past Evan Comerford.
And Crossmaglen forward O’Neill turned provider for the second goal. His pass found Jason Duffy in space and Duffy jinked around John Small and then chipped Comerford to leave it 2-5 to 0-5. Armagh added three more points – two from Rory Grugan and a superb score from the left corner from O’Neill – to leave it 2-8 to 0-5 at the break.
Dean Rock, brought on late in the first half after Cormac Costello had gone off injured, nailed an early free after the resumption but Dublin could find no fluency and there were two wides (the final total was 14) before Cameron McCormack reduced the gap to seven.
Armagh remained composed and after Jarly Og Burns, who carried the ball forward with pace and purpose throughout the game, was fouled O’Neill’s free restored the visitors’ efficient dominance.
Niall Scully fisted a score for the Dubs but Lee Gannon’s indisciplined barge on Tiarnan Kelly allowed Grugan to add another free and then Niall Rowland and substitute Stefan Campbell did the spadework for Connaire Mackin – as good in the second half as his brother Ciaran had been in the first – to surge forward and leave it 2-11 to 0-8.
Campbell got on the scoresheet himself minutes later. He was one of three subs to score as Armagh finished the game out by taking advantage of the gaping holes Dublin left at the back as they attempted to get back into the game.
Lorcan O’Dell did manage a goal – via touches of both Mackin brothers – with 10 minutes to go but Niall Grimley and Greg McCabe points ensured that there would be no late drama.

Hurling News
U7s in DKIT
The U7s travelled to DKIT for a blitz where they had several games with Louth & Monaghan kingpins Knockbridge & Castleblaney. There was some great enthusiasm and effort on display as the young hurlers from the Mourne county put into effect all the skills that managers Anthony O’Brien & Damien McConville had passed on over the last few weeks of training.
U20 Hurlers
It was a bitterly cold night, but it didn’t deter the U20s from putting on two entertaining matches under lights last night. Ballycran travelled down to Newry and although missing several lads they still had quality hurlers on show. Warrenpoint were also missing a few lads with Darragh Austin & Oran Murney unavailable and Tiarnan Tinnelly having to withdraw towards the end of the first game through injury.
An impressive 1-5 from Tinnelly given that he was only on the field for 20-25 minutes, backed up by an explosive performance from Oisin Kelly with 2-2 and a fourth goal from Oisin Magone ensured the blues pushed the ‘Ards men right to the wire. With time almost up it looked like it was going to finish evens, but with virtually the last play of the game Ballycran pinched a goal to earn a hard-fought victory.
The next game for the blues saw them clash with Michael Cusack’s, an amalgamation of Newry Shamrocks & Carryduff. Cusack’s got an early goal in the first half, but with Oisin Magone taking up the mantle for the blues with 0-3 first half points, it was a real tight game to call with the teams only separated by single a point at the short whistle.
The second half saw Cusack’s miss three vital scores, as the blues levelled the game and slowly built up a lead, once more Magone scored four second half points to give the Blues a three-point victory.
Overall the joint management Paddy Lock & Gerry O’Neill were very pleased with the performances on the night and can thank their coaches Ally Higgins & Chris Teague for putting the boys through their paces.
