Newry Ladies 0-0 Derg Valley Ladies
Newry hosted a strong Derg Valley team on Saturday in their latest league match. The opening exchanges were frantic on a cold afternoon which warmed the spectators up. Chances fell early on to Stacey Kidd and Rose Clarke but they were unable to convert which would have put the home side in a commanding lead.
Derg Valley started to create chances of their own but Katie McCullough in nets and the Newry defence kept them at bay.
In the second half both sides went all out to get on the score sheet but a mixture of great defence and missed opportunities left the side 0-0 going into the final quarter. Caroline Ferris and Suzzane Gilmore had further chances for Newry but to no avail as the match finished in an entertaining draw.

Team: Kathryn Baird (captain), Laverne Inns, Katie McCullough, Chrissie McAuley, Sarah McNeilly, Zara Moffett, Lisa Murdock, Emma-Jayne Moffett, Jodie Freeman, Rhianna Hale, Suzanne Gilmore, Rose Clarke, Stacey Kidd, Sara Adams, Caralyn Ferris
Harlequins 1-0 Newry 1’s
Newry were on the road on Saturday as they travelled to face Belfast Harlequins, with a depleted squad they knew they would be up against it from the start. However, Newry started brightly with Corey Large getting an opportunity within the first minute. This was to be their only chance in the opening quarter as Harlequins dominated possession for long periods. There was bad news for Newry in the second quarter and Daryl Barlow pulled up with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Matty Russell with his first appearance in 18months.
Harlequins forced a number of corners with Jeremy Greer clearing two off the line but they were reduced to very little from open play. In the second half the home side came on every stronger but again a resolute defence held them out. Newry’s luck did run out when late in the third quarter Quins hit on the break and scored one at the front post. With time running out Newry fired more men forward but could not find an equaliser as Quin’s came away 1-0 victors.

A new book recalling the history of local soccer team Windmill Stars has been launched by local author Tony Bagnall and is already selling like the proverbial hotcakes.
Windmill: the Story of the Stars was launched last Saturday November 19, in front of a huge crowd in Bellini’s.

The author says: “I got great satisfaction in writing and producing the book. No doubt everyone will have have their favourite chapters. My three favourites were:
The Mid-Ulster Shield final in 2014 when Paddy Hearty scored that astonishing injury time equaliser.
That famous match in 1995 between Windmill and Newry Celtic, when the Stars ran out 6-4 winners.
And the Intermediate Cup final earlier this year when John Joe headed home a late, late winner to beat Ballymacash.”

Club Chairperson Eamon McCann explained "Our ‘Cow Pat’ fundraising initiative will involve a well fed and watered cow (yes a real cow!), rumoured to be a direct descendant of the ‘Brown Bull of Cooley’. The cow will be released on to our pitch at High Street Bessbrook.
"Before the cow is let loose virtual squares will be randomly numbered per the actual square numbers shown on the tickets sold and then electronically marked out on a computer generated grid map to create a “virtual field” with exactly the same dimensions as the entire real field (excluding the goal areas which will be fenced off) that is contained within the fenced area at the hurling pitch.
"The cow will then be let loose to wander about the real field until she does her “business”. Once the exact position of her “business” on the real field has been carefully measured by our experienced ‘clap patrol’ it will be plotted on to the “virtual field” on the computer!"
Wherever the cow has “clapped”,the owner of that square will receive the prize of £1000.
Tickets, priced at £5 (Books of 5 for £20) are on sale on the club’s social media Facebook page, club officials and ‘Cow Pat’ competition coordinator Donna Tavey +44 7766 807763 who is promising a chance for ticket buyers to to win some ‘moo-lah’ and at the same time help the Ulster Junior Hurling Club Championship winners in 2022 raise much needed funds.
Donaghadee Ladies 2-0 Newry Ladies
Newry Ladies travelled to wet and windy Bangor to play Donaghadee which resulted in a 2-0 defeat. Newry started strong and created some good linkages but were unable to get past the Donaghadee’s solid defence. It wasn’t long before Donaghadee played the ball into Newry’s circle scoring their first goal of the match. Newry continued to work hard and sweeper Chrissie McAuley played some great hit outs clearing the ball well out of Newry’s half. Unfortunately, with only minutes from half time, Donaghadee scored their second goal. Newry managed to get a few chances in the second half but it just wasn’t their day. With super defending from the Newry ladies who fought to the final whistle no further goals were conceded.
Team: Kathryn Baird (captain), Laverne Inns, Katie McCullough, Chrissie McAuley, Zara Moffett, Rebecca Murdock, Stephanie Smart, Jodie Freeman, Rhianna Hale, Suzanne Gilmore, Stacey Kidd, Sara Adams, Abbey Haire

Newry took on Portadown at the Showgrounds yesterday in the Danske Bank Premiership. The result might not have went the way Newry would have liked but the game marked an incredible 350 games managed by Darren Mullen, something to be celebrated indeed.
It was a match of two halves for Newry City, they appeared to have the upper hand most of the first half and were put to the sword in the second half which was much more fractious with referee Jamie Robinson dishing out 6 penalty cards.

Newry’s Donal Rocks was very busy in the opening moves and an early pass from Noel Healy created an opportunity but the shot was held by Portadown keeper Barr who had a good game.
Then James Teelan crossed to Daniel Hughes but the ball went too far and the opportunity was missed for a shot at the Portadown goal.
Portadown were challenging from the start and keeper Steven Maquire made an excellent save for Newry as Jenkins fired on target.
But Newry pressed forward on ten minutes and Portadown’s Lee Upton received the first of the yellows for flooring Noel Healy flying up the left wing. The free kick saw Andrew Martin rise in the air and get his head to the ball but keeper Barr held the ball well.
Hughes and Teelan played up front for Newry keeping up the pressure.
Newry defender Healy was playing an active role in building attacks up the left wing on a number of occasions and a pass through to Lockhart on 21 minutes saw the ball just go over the top bar.
Then Hughes was unlucky after he launched a volley on target from inside the Portadown box but if deflected off a defender for a corner.
Again Healy put the ball through to Rocks in the face of the Portadown goal but before he could blink a defender was on him and quickly gained possession disrupting the goal opportunity.
Newry seemed the keener of the two teams to open the scoring, but Portadown managed to increase the pressure and the game went up a gear in physical contact. Portadown’s Gregory Moorhouse received a yellow for a tackle on Rocks.

Lockhart managed to control a cross from Ryan McGivern and volleyed on target from outside the box but the shot was well held by keeper Barr.
There was four minutes extra time announced for the first half and the game was open. Portadown’s Joshua Archer headed at the Newry goal from a corner but a deflection went over the top bar which led to another two corners.
The first period ended with Reece Jordan firing over the Newry goal.
As the match progressed in the second half, Portadown looked much more energised and were taking the game to Newry and pressed forward.
Then in a scramble in the Newry goalmouth, Portadown’s Lee Upton found the ball at his feet and slotted it into the right hand corner rocking Newry.
Newry fought back quickly and it was all hands to the pump. Healy fired an excellent cross in to the Portadown goalmouth but Barr was having none of it and punched it out clear.
There was an excellent move from Rocks who battled through the resolute Portadown defence and crossed to Lockhart within scoring distance but the pass was a touch too strong to control.
Although Newry were pressing for a spell there was one moment of danger when the ball trundled across the goalmouth and there were no Portadown feet to tap it in. Newry were living on the edge.
On 60 minutes Teelan volleyed and the ball came off the keeper to Healy who pounced on it and his shot was low but inched wide of the Portadown post.
The match had gone up a gear and Newry were looking for an equaliser. Newy put on Brian Healy for Dale Montgomery and Donal Scullion for Thomas Lockhart to freshen up the front end.
Just when Newry were gearing up for an assault on Portadown, the visitors attacked quickly and a long lob from Gregory Moorhouse put them two goals ahead on 67 minutes.
Again Newry refreshed with subs: John McGivern for Andrew Martin and Jamie Clarke for James Teelan.
Newry’s Brian Healy sent the ball down through the middle to John McGovern who made a tremendous low volley on target but Barr’s goalkeeping was sound and he managed to smother the ball.
Again Newry tested the stalwart Portadown keeper when Noel Healy passed to Rocks but keeper Barr again managed to save the volley.
Then just when the match could have magically turned for Newry, the home side received a coffin nail of a goal when Jordan Jenkins blasted the ball past Stephen Maquire in the Newry nets.
Newry managed to claim a consolation goal when John McGovern buried the ball into the middle of the Portadown net on 82 minutes.
Newry then went full on and attacked Portadown and there were shouts for a penalty when Rocks appeared to have been brought down in the box.
The final whistle was a merciful release for Newry. Ryan McGivern was red carded in the 82nd minuted and Newry had 2 yellow cards while Portadown had 3 yellow cards testifying to the hard physical contest the match had devolved into.
It was a tough second half which did not flow well, but Portadown took the points on the day.
Final Score: Newry 1 3 Portadown.

Newry & Armagh MLA, Justin McNulty has met with Sports Minister Jack Chambers to seek support for an ambitious all-island agenda on sports.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr. McNulty commented: “I was pleased to have the opportunity to engage with Minister Chambers on a raft of cross-border sports issues.
“We discussed Ireland and the UK’s joint bid for Euro 2028, and the real impetus that brings to the Casement Park project. The Euro bid presents a massive opportunity to develop Casement Park and present it to a world audience in 2028, and it is vital that all levels of government are working in tandem to bring that project to completion ahead of the games.
“I was pleased also to have the opportunity to discuss the potential to boost overall participation in sport across the island. Minister Chambers and I have been working together for quite some time on expanding access to, and participation in, GAA for All, and I know that the Minister is passionate about the potential that sport has to change and enhance lives.
“I want to see sport reaching more people across the country. We need to see a more concerted effort to boost female participation in sport, and it’s important that this happens at a young age. It is vital that we boost PE participation and physical literacy amongst young people of all backgrounds. Not only does it foster cognitive and interpersonal development, but it greatly enhances overall physical and mental health.
“Jack Chambers is an exemplary ambassador for sports across the country, and it’s a pleasure to be working with him to bring sports to a wider audience."
