Resounding win for Bangor over Newry
It was not an easy start to the New Year for Newry firsts as they travelled to league leaders Portadown on Saturday, however in the opening exchanges it looked like Newry might be causing an upset as they went one up through Marcus Murdock who scored his first goal for the club.
This appeared to waken Bangor as they pushed forward and in the 2nd quarter they got back on level terms through a short corner. Just before the break they went up another gear and scored two quick fire goals to make it three one at half time.
Newry tried to some hope get back into the game but Bangor used their subs well to run Newry ragged and create space all over the park. They made it for with a slick passing move finding a free player at the back post for a tap in. Newry continued to fight and pulled one back with a great drag flick from Colin Henning. It proved to be only a consolation as Bangor went on to score two in the last five minutes for a resounding 6-2 victory.

Another away match for Newry as they travelled to Stormont to take on Northern Ireland Civil Service on Saturday.
Newry competed and fought throughout the game with only 11 first team players available. Civil Service had the full accompaniment and were rolling substitutes regularly to try and tire the visitors out. However this tactic was not working and they were unable to break Newry down until they had a huge slice of luck in the second quarter when a deflected cross caught McGivern out in nets and he could only help it into the goal to make it one nil at the break.
Early in the second half Newry got back on level terms when Kris Fletcher fired home from a short corner. The game ebbed and flowed with both sides looking for the decisive second goal. Civil Service forced a number of short corners early in the forth quarter and eventually got a break through to get their second of the game.
Newry fired men forward in search of the equaliser and came close with their own corners but could not get back on level terms and were narrowly beaten 2-1.

Tonight in Newry sees the first of three roadshow events for local sports clubs to launch the Council’s Sports Facility Review and provide guidance for the 2023-2024 Sports Financial Assistance programmes. The Newry event is in Newry Leisure Centre from 6.30 - 8pm 30 January.
Following on from successfully implementing the key recommendations of the Sports Facility Strategy 2017-2021, the Council commissioned a review of Sports hub facilities across the district.
This included a review of key sports from association football, Gaelic games, rugby, hockey, cricket, lawn bowls, athletics, and water sports. Research undertaken during 2021-2022 involved public engagement events and community consultations with over 200 sports clubs including sport governing bodies and local schools and colleges.
Other site surveys and inspections of sports facilities were also undertaken during this period and involved the Council liaising with other key sector stakeholders.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage said, “I am delighted the Council is continuing to develop our communities, clubs and people through investing in sporting infrastructure over the coming years. Following on from the extensive consultation the Sports Development Team have developed a Sports Facility Review document which will be used as means to monitor progress in addressing the identified gaps in sports infrastructure provision. I advise sports clubs to attend the information sessions to get an understanding of the sports facility review document and best position themselves for funding and future club development.”
The Sports Development Team have organised several roadshow events to explain the findings of the research, elaborate on the recommendations and outline how these changes will have an impact on the Sports Development Financial Assistance Calls.
The Council’s Financial Assistance team will also present at the roadshows this year’s sports funding allocation budget, to which sports clubs may apply. This will inform sports clubs on the Financial Assistance funding programmes available this year, for example the development of Summer Be Active Sports Camps, and minor and major Capital works.
All local sports clubs are invited to the launch of the Sports Facility Review and guidance for the 2023-2024 Sports Financial Assistance programmes.
The roadshow events will be held in the following venues.
The Sports Development Team will be joined by Tony Morrison from Otium Leisure Consultancy who will explain the key findings of the research to date. There will also be an opportunity for sports clubs to have an input on the Council’s new proposed Sports Development Strategy.
Please note there is no need to prebook for these events, however we would ask that there are no more than two representatives from each club attending an event.

Newry Seconds produced an excellent display to get the better of rivals Banbridge at Havelock Park on Saturday.
Despite going behind in the opening quarter, they dominated after that, scoring in the remaining three quarters of the tie to emerge deserving winners.
A sluggish start to the match saw the hosts grab the first goal of the game towards the end of the first quarter, with the Banbridge centre-froward reacting quickest to a loose ball in the circle to smash it home.
However, Newry gradually began to assert their authority on proceedings and levelled just before half-time when Alex Irwin converted from close range to make 1-1 at the break.
After that, it was all Newry and they took the lead for the first time in the match midway through the third quarter with a superbly-worked move finished off the David Andrews.
Josh Porter’s aerial across the pitch from the right hand-side found left-back Jonny Gregg in space. He slipped it to Andrews, who rifled past the Bann keeper from just inside the area.
The result was all but wrapped up early in the final quarter following a slick short corner routine.
Scott Blakely, Andrews and Porter were all involved, with the latter applying the finishing touch from eight yards out. That made it a deserved 3-1 scoreline for the visitors. And while Banbridge did pull one back from the penalty spot in the closing moments, Newry saw out the remaining time to pick up a win their display deserved.
This Saturday, the Seconds are on the road again, playing Mossley away from home.
Final score Banbridge 2 Newry Seconds 3
Team: Newry Seconds: Richie Henning, Eddie Graham, David Lawson, Jonny Gregg, Gareth McCullough, Josh Porter, David Andrews, Scott Blakely, Simon McCafferty, Corey Large, Alex Irwin, Alan McMinn, Jordan Whiteside, Joel Maxwell
Newry 1's hosted Kilkeel on Friday night in another tough game against a strong side. Kilkeel dominated possession for long periods but were struggling to break through a tough Newry defence. The homeside were offering little in attack as the visitors snuffed out and chances and were quickly bac on the attack.
Kilkeel got their first with a well worked passing move down their left for a simple tap in at the back post in the second quarter. They got their second just before half time to go in with a comfortable lead.
Newry tired to make more of a game of it in the second half but their short corners and chances did not amount to much. Kilkeel got their third of the game with a short corner of their own to put the match well and truly out of reach as they ran out 3-0 winners.
Final score Newry 1’s 0 - 3 Kilkeel 1’s

Newry 1’s 1-5 QUB 1’s
Newry hosted league chasing Queens on Saturday and after a spirited fight eventually ran out of steam late in the game conceding three late goals to go down 5-1.
Queens started brightly and scored 6 minutes in from a well worked passing move down the left hand side. This appeared to wake the home side up as they started to push forward and were unable to capitalise on a number of short corners. Queens had plenty of possession but were unable to break Newry down as they went in one up at the break.
Queens again scored early in the second half catching Newry cold however Newry fought back and got one back through David England to make it 2-1. It could have been two all when Jeremy Greer broke away and wriggled free in the circle only to see his effort cleared off the line. Josh Porter had a golden opportunity but could only blaze over the bar at full stretch with the goal at his mercy. Queens utilized their full squad and as the game wore on Newry started to run out of legs. With 8 minutes remaining the away side got their third effectively putting the game to bed. However they did not hold back and scored two more late goals to go away with a flattering 5-1 victory.

NICS 2-0 Newry 2’s
A Depleted Newry 2’s travelled to Belfast to face NICS on Saturday. The home side started well and were confident in possession but struggled to break down a deep sitting Newry defence. Their dominance did eventually pay off after a mix up in the Newry defence gifted Service their first goal.
This forced Newry to push forward and chances fell to McMinn, McCafferty and Blakely but all were wasteful in front of goal.
Newry’s tactic of hitting on the counter was working well in the second half but still could not get that equalizing goal. As they started to fire more men forward in search of the goal Service hit on a counter attack of their own with two minutes left to seal the victory and all three points.
Team: R. Henning, S. Blakley, S. MCCafferty, D. Lawson, B. Scott, A. McMinn, J. Maxwell, J. Lawson, J. Whiteside, S. Graham, T. McMinn
