Conditions were perfect for the Silver Ulster championship final between Down and Donegal in the Festival of Football at St McCartan's, Auger at the weekend. Both teams were clearly nervous in the opening exchanges - both getting into good attacking positions but turning the ball over once they entered the final third. Donegal struck first opening the scoring with a nice point from play. Down equalised soon after following some nice interchanges forcing Donegal into a foul - Abigail Harvey slotted the free over the bar. This seemed to settle the Mourne ladies down as they started to apply pressure on the Donegal kick out and their defence. Grace Guest added a point for Down then she crashed another shot off the bar. From the resulting kick out Down managed to turn the Donegal defence over and capitalised with a goal from Khloe Davis. A couple of wides followed and Donegal managed a point in reply but the Down girls tails were up and they turned their pressure into points coming towards the end of the first half with another point from Grace Guest but crucially a second goal from Abigail Hanvey. Going in at half time it was Down 2-3 to Donegal 0-2.
Down started in the 2nd half right where they had left off in the first. Pressure all over the field on Donegal and when in possession moving the ball around from side to side with confidence. They were creating opportunities and Anaiah Lennon O'Hara capitalised scoring 2 goals and a point in the opening ten minutes of the second period. Another shot came back off the bar for Down but Donegal weren't going to lie down and scored an excellent point in reply. However Anaiah Lennon O'Hara scored another point from play then Izzie McCoey slotted a free over the bar with 8 minutes left.
Donegal showed their fighting spirit scoring a penalty in the dying minutes then another point but it was all over.
Down ran out comfortable enough winners in the end 4-06 to 1-04. And some fantastic scenes of celebration from the whole squad following a great performance.
Captain Maria McStay lifted the trophy for the Mourne ladies and the management team expressed how proud they are of the team.
Down Team: Caoimhe Russell, Mollie Quinn, Maria McStay, Maisy Owens-Leonard, Caoimhe Donnelly, Ciara Doyle, Estelle Austin, Clodagh O’Donnell, Grace Guest, Ella Fallon, Maisie McAteer, Olivia McCusker, Izzie McCooey, Anaiah Lennon O’Hara, Khloe Davis, Kelsey Murray, Caitlin Bradshaw, Orlaith Mann, Olivia Dean, Anna McEvoy, Sofia Keenan Travers, Eibhlinn Poacher, Sophia Garvey, Jessica Flanagan, Eilidh O’Neill, Annie Fitzpatrick, Annie Fegan, Ruby McDonald, Caitriona Blaney & Ciara McKernan.

Yesterday's Ulster Senior Football Championship Semi Final between Armagh and Down won't enter the record books for the most skilful game of the year but it did have its fair bit of excitement, not least extra time when both teams went in level with all to play for. Down managed two goals in normal time with Armagh unable to find the back of the net on this occasion.
Most of the four final minutes were spent passing the ball back and forward by Armagh before a pass came to Jason Duffy who managed to put Armagh ahead by a point. Next there was a free that started as an Armagh free and ended up a Down free. It was a scoreable position but Down's Oisin Savage sent it wide, this ending a chance for extra time to change the outcome.
Final score Armagh 0- 13 Down 2-6

For Armagh senior footballers yesterday was again a case of so close, but yet so far. A packed stadium of 28,896 enthralled Armagh and Donegal fans attended the Ulster Final in St Tiernach's Park in Clones and a torrential downpour coupled with a touch of thunder and lightning only added to the tension and drama.
The first half started off a pretty even affair. Armagh were first on the scoreboard but Donegal replied each time. Donegal got ahead by two points but Armagh kept coming back managing to get to half time, a point ahead, Armagh 0-10 to Donegal 0-9.
Half time saw a fitting tribute to the players and backroom team from the Armagh team that beat Down in the 1999 Ulster Final. Despite the rain it gave the crowd a chance to celebrate the inspirational team from the era of the two Brian's, Brian Canavan and Brian McAlinden.
The opening ten minutes of the second half saw Armagh increase their lead by another three points from play from Conor Turbitt, Oisin Conaty and Stefan Campbell. Donegal scored a point and then Armagh's Rian O'Neill replied keeping the lead to four. Donegal replied a minute later followed by another Armagh Point just as quick from Stefan Campbell.
With a four point lead for the Orchard county halfway into the second half it really did look that it would be Armagh's day but that was where the momentum stopped for them and Donegal were the ones to add to the scoreboard in the final 15 minutes bringing it to 0-15 apiece at full time.
Extra time it was with tit for tat scores once again taking Armagh into the break with a one point lead Armagh 0-18 to Donegal 0-17.
The last spell of extra time saw Armagh briefly take a 2 point lead but Donegal came back and took the final point of the game bringing the teams level once again at 0-20 each.
With Armagh coming out on the wrong side of penalties at last year's Ulster Final against Derry it wasn't the ideal place to be but here they were again. It's the third time penalties have been their downfall. A cruel way to end a game with Shane McPartland who scored a great opening penalty for Armagh taking the sixth, which was saved by Donegal keeper Shaun Patton and deprived Armagh once again of a much needed trophy.
Armagh now play Westmeath in two weeks time at the Athletic Grounds in the All Ireland Series Group 2 round robin stage with Derry and Galway also in the mix.

Whitecross man Micheál McCloy is getting ready for next week's Ireland and USA Down Syndrome Futsal Tour 2024 in County Meath. It will be the first international tour of its kind and great excitement is building in the local Down Syndrome sports community, as they look forward welcoming the USA Futsal team to the Emerald Isle. Michael had a great 2023 when he was the joint top scorer in the SUDS European Championships in Italy.
Relations between the USA and Ireland have long been based on common ancestral ties and shared values. It is hoped this tour will aid both teams in preparation for 2025 SUDS Futsal Championship for players with Down syndrome.
Ireland’s Down Syndrome Futsal team competed in the European Championships in Italy last September. The squad had a jam-packed week, playing 5 games in 4 days. Turkey, Italy and Portugal the more seasoned teams had to stand their ground against the newcomers.
Futsal is a form of five-aside indoor football played with a smaller, heavier ball than football and is an ideal sport for Ireland as it is played from October to March.
This will be the first international participation for the USA squad, an affiliate of US Soccer, since they came together early 2023.
The USA’s mixed gender squad consists of 8 players and 8 Irish squad players substituted by 2 upcoming development players who will train at Gormanston Park for the week of 20th -24th May.
Mark Trevor, Vice President of Down Syndrome Sports of America commented: “We are absolutely honoured and thrilled to be invited by Ireland’s Down Syndrome Futsal team to train and compete with them in the Emerald Isle. Our players and coaches are looking forward to what will be a tremendous experience, i’m sure, both on and off the pitch!”
Captain of the Irish team, Josh Hennessy, is looking forward to train with the USA and making new friends with both players and coaches.
Futsal for players in Ireland is developing at a steady pace and those involved hope to foster a Futsal community both locally and internationally.
“A week like this, offers a lifetime of experiences to our players. Making new friends, improve their football skills and work towards barrier free sport for players with disabilities.” said DSI Louth Meath branch Sport coordinator Tessa van Heerden.

“It was a privilege to be nominated to the National Poc Fada Croke Park Committee by the GAA President and I thank Jarlath. The Poc Fada is not only a special sporting contest but also a terrific reminder of our cultural past."
McGinn was involved in Poc Fada thirty years ago through Fr Pól Mac Seáin known affectionately as ‘An tAthair’.
