Photographer Columba O'Hare has been taking photos out and about around Newry for years and years now and at long last has started to convert his collection from Negative to Digital. The photographs span from the early 1980's onwards and while it only seems like yesterday (to him anyway) the fashion and decor of places seem to suggest different.
By publishing them on www.newry.info on a regular basis we hope to provoke a bit of nostalgia and craic and via our link to Facebook to show them to as large an audience as physically possible.
The number of photographs are daunting - well over 2000 films, some better labeled than others so for the ones he has scant information for it would be great to hear from someone who knew more of the time/ location/ place etc.
Well you have to begin somewhere and this marks the start of a journey from gelatin to pixels, goodness knows how long it will take or if any of us will survive to see the project finished but here goes ...
These photographs I believe were taken at the International Ceilidhe House in Water Street, I would suggest Mid 1980's. I don't recognise too many but Jimmy Burns appears and could that be Bernard O'Hanlon from Mullaghbane in one of them? - i'm not sure!

I think these photographs were taken in August 1983 but as usual I could be out a year or two.
I can't remember who the Artist is.
In fact the only people I would recognise instantly would be Council Chairman Jim McCart and Nan Sands who was probably the Vice Chairman at the time?

I would love to know more about this event. It appears to be the early 1980's and the photographs were obviously taken in the Scout Hall at Home Avenue and then a Parade took place.
Lifelong Scout Bertie Flynn makes an appearance but as to putting names to anyone else I'm lost!

I took these photographs for the Newry and Mourne Weekly Newspaper in the early 1980's. The quality isn't so hot and the negatives aren't as pristine as they should be but it was my early days. They were taken at the Middle Bank or Saint Christopher's Park as it became down at the Albert Basin.
It's hard to believe that they show a Newry that existed just 30 Years ago.
I think the story was to highlight the conditions of the Travelling Community living in Newry at the time.
The conditions certainly were very difficult and it's hard to imagine how hard it would have been to grow up there.
The only thing that doesn't seem to have changed much are Daisy Hill Hospital and the design/use of Shopping Trollies!

The latest batch of photographs to see the light of day from the 1980's include
A Concern Fun Run starting at the Newry Sports Centre, Irish Dancing presentations, location unknown and a very pleasant day at Dromantine Sunday.
Fashions certainly seem to have changed quite a bit.

Some wonderful costumes at this Fancy Dress Competition in the 1980's quite possibly 1985.
As usual there were the outfits of the era such as Princess Di, Denis Taylor complete with trophy probably for winning the World Snooker Championship (which he won in 1985!) and a wonderful Clown with the line "Maggie Thatcher isn't Clowning around"which as we well know years later was certainly on the money!
Friar Tucks got a mention with meals on wheels and not to mention a not too cheerful Hunchback of Notre Dam!

Remember Gatsby's nightclub in Newry. I think along with Cupids it was one of the happening places of the time and Newry's young and trendies (?) flocked to it in their droves.
I don't remember much about it myself, I think I just wasn't trendy enough or too busy running around Dundalk and Carrickmacross and Cookstown and Monaghan and .....

These photographs were taken at Barcroft Community Centre in the 1980's early to mid. (I stand corrected! thought it was the Sports Centre)
I recognise a few faces but I'm very poor on names.
Would that be a young Banjo Bannon in this picture by any chance? Seems to be a few pupils from St Paul's School as well.

I have to say I think this batch of photographs from the early 80's is just brilliant. This looks like a great session somewhere and I just wish I could remember it. I'm sure I was sober!
I can't work out if it was someone's house or a shebeen or a pub or club... Help someone. I would guess somewhere South Armagh like Silverbridge but it's a wild guess.
I love the wallpaper and the good old bottles of Harp not to mention the Deirdre Barlow Glasses and wonderful hairstyles. Duffle coats, Aran Sweaters, they have it all.
