A significant new Government funding initiative promises to breathe new life into aging community centres, halls and facilities throughout the region
Local community groups and voluntary organisations will hopefully benefit from a substantial £4 million investment programme designed to upgrade and modernise their premises.
The Northern Ireland Community Infrastructure Fund, unveiled by Communities Minister Gordon Lyons will address critical infrastructure needs. The pilot scheme comes as a direct response to growing concerns about the deteriorating condition of many community facilities. During recent visits to organisations Minister Lyons observed firsthand the challenges facing these essential spaces.
Many of the region's community buildings are struggling with outdated heating systems, poor accessibility features, and structural issues that threaten their long-term viability. The new fund aims to tackle these problems head-on, ensuring these vital community assets can continue serving their neighbourhoods for years to come.
The funding initiative will cast a broad net, supporting diverse community spaces including: Church halls and religious community centres, Village halls serving rural communities, Orange halls and cultural venues, Sports clubs and recreational facilities and Community outreach centres
Eligible projects under the scheme encompass essential maintenance work, energy efficiency installations, accessibility improvements for disabled users, and general internal renovations that enhance functionality.
The programme is scheduled to launch in autumn 2025, with an initial expression of interest process opening applications to eligible organisations. Detailed guidance on application procedures and selection criteria will be released closer to the launch date.
Community groups interested in the scheme are advised to begin assessing their infrastructure needs and gathering necessary documentation in preparation for the application window.
The programme will launch with an expression of interest in autumn 2025. Further details on the application process and criteria will be available in due course.
