Write a commentDespite the Pride in Newry Festival and Parade being a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic like many other events around the world, resulting in its cancellation this year, Newry man Damian McShane has decided that he couldn't let the date pass without marking the occasion in some way so tomorrow 29 August he has decided to personally walk the route of the parade himself.
Damian said "Unfortunately the official pride parade has been cancelled this year. However, rather than just let the occasion pass without marking the event that I and others have worked so tirelessly to build up. I am going to mark the occasion by walking the Pride in Newry parade route, together with my pride flag, on the pavement, on Saturday 29th of August this year, at 12 noon. Observing social distancing.
"For anyone wishing to join me, you will be welcomed but please observe the etiquette re distancing, masks etc. Oh and if you want to dress up etc then do so.
"There will be no music, speeches or gathering. It will be a simple walk of the Pride in Newry route. Pride has always been a protest, celebration, remembrance and this year will be no different in that regard. I will be on the pavement and in compliance with the advice given re health and safety."
Damian will leave McClelland Park tomorrow at 12 noon.
