Newry and Mourne District Council are offering local people the opportunity to take on an allotment for a year at Alderside Farm at a reduced rate of £150. There will also be support and training provided by the Conservation Volunteers for participants of this programme.
A community garden open day was held recently by the council in partnership with the Conservation Volunteers at Alderside Farm on the Armagh Road.
The event was organised to raise awareness of the benefits of ‘growing your own’ produce and getting active outdoors.
Jenny McGetrick from the Conservations Volunteers explained, “Running an allotment is great fun. You can save money by growing your own healthy fruit and vegetables and get fit at the same time!”
