Write a commentFive days of fun in the Barcroft Park area of Newry saw a host of activities enjoyed by hundreds of residents of all ages.
Barcroft was buzzing with a range of activities and events during the annual summer festival and summer scheme which culminated in a huge fun day and garden party, with bouncy castles, open air disco, a barbeque and various other games and activities.
Commenting on the success of the event Barcroft Community Association Chairperson, Darren Thompson, said “This turnout for this year’s summer programme was amazing with large numbers of young children, teenagers and adults attending all the events. There was an exciting range of activities including our first ever ‘Colour Run’, Roller Disco, Kite Making, Gaelic football coaching, a ‘Green Gym’ programme during which the children built their own ‘Fairy Glen’ model; along with the completion of a mural project at the entrance to First Street in Barcroft Park. The Fun Day and Garden party which was organised in partnership with Newry Felons Association attracted well over 150 people with dozens of families in attendance many of them new nationals, who were taking part for the first time."
Mr Thompson explained that the success of the festival and summer scheme is down to the selfless work of volunteers and the local residents who continue to support the activities. "People don’t see the hundreds of hours that our committee members put into organising major events like the festival and the daily tasks of running the community centre. It is all worth it in the end when large numbers of families and children turn up and enjoy themselves.”
