The PSNI have said there will be an appropriate and proportionate policing operation in place tomorrow Saturday, 6 June, for the Great March for Gaza.

The event is organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign's Lurgan and Newry branches and organisers plan to leave Lurgan at 8.30am tomorrow, arriving in Poyntzpass approximately 4pm, Jerrettspass 5.30pm, Newry 7pm where there will be a rally at the Town Hall and then it will leave at approximately 7.30pm and continue on to Omeath where it is expected to arrive at 10pm.

Motorists should expect some traffic disruption along the route between Lurgan and Newry and especially in the Scarva area where a counter protest is planned by Scarva Concerned Residents at the same time. The Parades Commission has ruled both these events can go ahead but has placed restrictions on them.

Another group, Markethill Volunteers Flute Band has also indicated that their members were walking between Scarva and Portadown and back along the towpath from 10am but the Parades Commission has ruled that this can't start untill 2.30pm from the village to avoid a clash with the Great March for Gaza.

The PSNI has asked anyone not taking part in the march to avoid the Newry Canal towpath between Portadown and Newry where possible. Drivers are asked to follow any diversions or directions given by officers on the ground.

Those taking part are reminded that while police will always facilitate and uphold the right to lawful, peaceful procession and protest, that right also comes with certain responsibilities.
