Armagh Observatory unveils July and August events

If there's not enough 'space' for you in Newry check out Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) which is continuing its summer activity programme, with a range of family events planned for July and August. The schedule includes space themed art sessions, an educational reptile encounter and an interactive dinosaur experience.

Children can get creative at AOP's Paint and Pop sessions, where they will create their own space themed artwork using materials provided by the observatory, while enjoying a fizzy drink as they paint. The sessions take place on 18 and 19 July and 8 and 9 August, at 11.30am and 2.15pm, and accompanying adults can enjoy a complimentary tea or coffee. The supervised sessions last approximately 90 minutes and are recommended for children aged six and over.

Jurassic Ark Encounters, running from 21 to 26 July, is an educational learning session focused on reptiles, bringing visitors up close with animals such as snakes, lizards and tortoises. Visitors who purchase any Dome show in combination with Paint and Pop will receive a 20 per cent discount.

Roar Roar Dinosaur, running from 28 July to 2 August, offers an interactive dinosaur experience combining entertainment with education. The immersive mini show explores the mystery of dinosaur extinction through live volcanic science experiments and includes a live egg hatching. Young visitors can get up close with baby dinosaurs, with opportunities to gently pet and feed them, and can meet Tyson the T-Rex for a family photo. Children can also craft and take home their own clay fossil as a souvenir.

Beyond the summer events, visitors to Armagh Observatory and Planetarium can learn about the history of astronomy in Armagh, the Solar System, stars and galaxies in the exhibition area, enjoy a snack in the café, browse space inspired gadgets and toys in the gift shop, and explore the Astropark Trails, which offer views of the Cathedral City.
