A 31 year old man has been arrested this afternoon on suspicion of attempted murder
It follows a serious assault of a woman in the Mourne View Park area of Newry.
Chief Inspector Davy Beck said: "The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment to her injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
The man is currently assisting police with their enquiries".
Commenting on the incident SDLP Newry Councillor Kevin McAteer expressed his concern “News of a stabbing has deeply shocked this community, this is a close knit area and local people are understandably shaken by the incident. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family at this difficult time.
“I want to be clear, however, that this is an isolated incident and is totally unreflective of the character of this community and the people here. The Mourneview Community Association has undertaken some excellent work in the area and I will continue to support that. Every area has to contend with anti-social behaviour and I will be working pro-actively with residents, local neighbourhood police officers and those involved to ensure it comes to an end.
“It is imperative that we see urgent action to address the deep concerns that residents have come to me with. In the coming days I intend to meet with representatives of Ulidia Housing Association to ensure that their worries no longer fall on deaf ears. We all have a role to play in making our communities better, more harmonious places to live. I will certainly be playing my part and will ensure others play theirs.”
