Local TV Presenter Pamela Ballantine hosted the recent Policing and Community Safety Partnership Youth Awards. The event was attended by 200 young people, their families and friends.  This was the 6th Annual event run by the PCSP in the style of the Oscars where finalists are invited and the winners announced at the event.

Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Councillor John McArdle congratulated the young people for their innovative ideas to combat rural crime, racism and anti-social behaviour and said he enjoyed watching the film clips which featured many local actors.

Attending the awards ceremony, Councillor Michael Ruane, Chairman of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership said: “I would particularly like to commend all the young people who participated in the policing and community safety competition, for their time and effort and ideas.  It is crucial to hear young people’s voices about rural crime, road safety and anti-social behaviour particularly when there is a tendency to label young people as a problem rather than as part of a potential solution.

Communities and the young people within them are well placed to respond to low level youth crime and to get involved in crime prevention.  When asked, young people can often be very articulate about the issues they face and have very good ideas about how anti-social behaviour can be reduced in their local communities.”

The Mayor added that the Youth Awards is a great example of the creative and innovative approach, which Newry and Mourne Policing and Community Safety Partnership has taken in the delivery of their projects and initiatives.

Winners received Kindle Fires and other great prizes.  The winning group in the Young People’s Awards received £50 towards activities in their group and Individuals in the Young Peoples Awards received a lorsha scarf and all received an engraved crystal trophy.
