Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has praised the people of Newry for their powerful show of solidarity and support during this weeks recent Baton of Hope event, which saw an incredible turnout in the city as part of a movement to break the stigma around mental health and suicide prevention.
The Baton of Hope campaign, which has been travelling across towns and cities to spark vital conversations about mental health, received a warm and emotional welcome in Newry, where hundreds gathered to walk in unity and spread the message that no one is ever alone.
Speaking after the event, Justin McNulty MLA said: “Today, Newry showed the very best of what our community stands for — compassion, unity, and hope. The sheer number of people, teams and organisations who turned out to support the Baton of Hope speaks volumes about the strength and solidarity here when it comes to mental health.
The message carried by this baton is simple but profound: you are never alone. Too many lives have been lost, and too many people still suffer in silence. Events like this help to break down barriers, challenge stigma, and offer support to those who need it most.
I want to pay tribute to the organisers, volunteers, and every single person who took part. You are all part of a movement that is changing lives and saving lives.”
Mr. McNulty also renewed his call for increased support for mental health services and greater investment in early intervention programmes.
“Words must be matched with action. It’s time for government at every level to prioritise mental health, resource services properly, and ensure help is available when and where it’s needed. The people of Newry have shown their commitment — now it's up to decision-makers to do the same.”
