The Police Service of Northern Ireland are reminding the local community in South Down to be safe over the Hallowe'en period.
South Down Neighbourhood Inspector, Gary McClatchey said: "We don't want to spoil the enjoyment of Halloween and responsible fireworks displays that most people have, but too many others misuse fireworks, and this causes concern, annoyance and even fear for many residents.
“Police will be adopting a two-strand approach this Halloween. We will be tackling those who carry out abuses, such as throwing bangers, and we will also be investigating those who supply them with fireworks illegally. “We want to catch those who sell fireworks illegally.
This is something that the community can help us with. If you become aware of any individuals or businesses selling fireworks without a licence or selling them to people who are under age, let us know.
“The law is clear on fireworks. You need a licence to buy, possess or use fireworks and the law also states that fireworks must be bought from a licensed dealer. Dealers must keep records of who they sell fireworks to.
"I would also ask all young people to be aware of the effect their actions or behaviour may have on the more vulnerable in their communities. I would also ask parents to talk to their children and explain the possible consequences of becoming involved in antisocial behaviour."
Anyone with information about the sale or use of illegal fireworks or who requires further advice should contact the neighbourhood team in South Down on 0845 600 8000.
