Developers of a new housing project at Bessbrook Mill are currently seeking conservation area consent and listed building consent from Planning. Back in 2011 Planning Permission was granted to develop Bessbrook Mill but this has since lapsed.
The mixed use development would see the upgrading of the existing mill building 58 houses and 214 apartments with both private and social housing. A total of 149 of the apartments would be contained within the existing mill building. Also included in the development would be 3 office units, 2 retail units and a gym.
A planning statement as part of the application explains "Bessbrook Mill historically has been in the core of Bessbrook Village, and in former years played a key role in the life-blood of the village. The closure of the Mill in the mid 1900’s resulted in local job losses and a reduction in the overall activity in the village. In recent years the site has been largely vacant, with the mill complex last used as a military base in 2007.
"In terms of project background, the proposal is broadly similar to a scheme previously approved (planning reference P/2007/1392/F) which was for a total of 272 dwelling units and associated site works, which has since expired. The attached proposals now represent an amended proposal to that which was previously approved in 2012."
The statement adds "The design proposals will provide a balanced residential and community-focused development. The proposal will bring a significant local landmark back into productive use and re-integrate what was historically the focal point of the village back into the urban fabric of Bessbrook.
This proposal is presented to Council as a viable option which will secure the site’s future for residential development, and which is considered to compliment local services and facilities."
The applications are being made by Farlstone Construction Limited.
