Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty is calling for additional bus and train services to Dublin this weekend for fans travelling the the All Ireland Quarter Finals in Croke Park. On Saturday 1 July Kerry take on Tyrone at 3.45pm and Armagh take on Monaghan at 6pm. On Sunday 2 July Derry v Cork at 1.45pm and Dublin v Mayo at 4pm.
Additional services by Translink have already sold out with very limited availability left on other special services.
Mr McNulty has written to Translink Chief Executive Chris Conway, asking him to make every effort to ensure fans can travel to Dublin.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said “Following the draw for the All-Ireland quarter-finals there has been huge interest from fans in Armagh, Tyrone and Derry wishing to travel to Dublin for the games at Croke Park. In anticipation of demand I wrote to Translink requesting extra services as we have seen in previous years and I would welcome their efforts to introduce a number of additional bus and train services.
“Even compared with previous years we have seen a huge number of Armagh supporters seeking to travel to Dublin by train and additional services have sold out very quickly. I am again asking Translink to introduce additional return rail services from Portadown and Newry and other stations if necessary to meet the huge demand.
“With large numbers travelling to Dublin over the weekend it would be greatly beneficial to see more people using public transport so that we don’t see thousands of extra cars on our roads. I greatly appreciate the cooperation Translink have shown this year and in the past when it comes to providing additional services and I’d ask them they do everything they can to facilitate a great weekend of sport, as we have seen with other major sporting events on this island in the past.”
We have contacted Translink to see if they plan to add any additional services.
